Pirates’ Moss designated for assignment

Brandon Moss’ time with the Pirates is likely over. The Pirates designated the oufielder for assignment on Monday in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Hayden Penn. The club claimed Penn off waivers from the Marlins. Moss was out of options.

I didn't even know Hayden Penn was on the team. They seem to have quite a few other bullpen options. All the talk was about keeping either Brandon Moss or Rule 5 guy John Raynor, a decision which became obvious as it became increasingly difficult to imagine other teams snapping up Moss when he got removed from the roster. So are they keeping John Raynor?

You have to like Hayden Penn as a waiver pickup. Good/great stuff and he put up a 120/37 K/BB in 110 IP as a 20 year old in AA and a 2.26 ERA with 85 Ks, 27 BBs and only 5 HR and 71 hits in 88 AAA innings the next year at only 21 years old. . Granted, that was in 2005 and 2006 but he was rushed, on the Orioles and dealt with some injuries. Great risk to take, there is some real talent there.

Well, Moss got a decent chance to play as a 25-year-old on a bad team last year, and he wasn't very good. How much better is really going to get? What role could he fill on a team?

He's a good corner defender with a strong arm. Might be able to fake CF, and you don't need to hit all that much to be a backup CF.

Angels should pick up Moss. He's a better backup OF option than Terry Evans, Reggie Willits, Corey Aldridge, or Mike Ryan. Peter Bourjos is the best of the bunch, but he really should be developing in AAA instead of playing twice a week and pinch running.

If Brandon Moss can just learn to make a little more contact, he'll have a nice career as a fourth outfielder. But he hasn't made any progress on that front in about three years now.
