Pirates Notebook: Wilson waives no-trade clause

Wilson: Made a list of all persons he had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Shortstop Jack Wilson has informed the Pirates he will accept a trade to any of the six teams named in his limited no-trade clause, including the Detroit Tigers.

The Pirates and Tigers continue to discuss a multiplayer deal that would send Wilson to Detroit, and Wilson wanted it known to all concerned that he would do nothing to disrupt it. He also would be open to trades to other teams.

...Detroit’s need for Wilson was heightened, to a degree, by the news yesterday that backup infielder Neifi Perez was suspended 80 games for a positive test for amphetamines. Wilson surely would play a more prominent role than Perez did, but Tigers manager Jim Leyland has said he wants to have three players capable of playing shortstop entering the playoffs, and he essentially is down to Carlos Guillen.

And Omar Infante. And Santiago will be back in a few weeks. And Inge, in a pinch. Hell, I saw Sheffield take infield at SS in Safeco, he looked alright. An of these options are preferable to trading for Jack Wilson.

And since when are we entering the playoffs?

I can see how the team might want to upgrade the SS defense, as Guillen has been banged up, and UZR says he has been crappy this year. But what is so wrong with Infante at SS? And seriously, if the team is so concerned about SS defense, why not just pick up Royce Clayton? Why bother paying so much more money through 2010 for a guy barely better than Royce Clayton?

Or try to get Vizquel from the Giants for Infante and an A-ball pitcher or something. Or one of the SS on the Rays. Or the Cubs. Or if you have to deal with the Pirates, Cesar Izturis. There have to be at least 10 reasonably available guys in baseball who are much better options than Jack Wilson. And it isn't as if any of those guys would cost anything more than one of the many interesting AA/AAA arms the Tigers have.

I wrote this in a Pirates preview back in March: "[Jack Wilson] really is a good defensive shortstop, but not so good that you'd actually want him playing every day. He's a good utility guy to have around. Truthfully, he's a white-boy clone of Neifi!, which probably bodes well for a long career in the psychedelic world of modern baseball management." (Emphasis added.)

It didn't exactly take deep insight to draw that connection. But good gracious, why is it that every team Neifi! plays for gets hopelessly addicted to him? Lose Neifi! and immediately a GM who otherwise seems to be one of the sharpest in the game starts looking for the closest approximation he can find, wasted money or minor-league talent be damned.
