Pirates president Coonelly charged with DUI

Pirates president Frank Coonelly has been charged with four counts related to drunken driving in Ross.

Ross Township police arrested Coonelly, 51, of Sewickley on Dec. 22 and charged him with drunken driving, driving the wrong way, careless driving and driving with a blood-alcohol content of at least .16, according to court records. The state’s legal limit is .08.

Police described the DUI charges as Coonelly`s first offenses, according to the court documents.

“My actions that evening were irresponsible and wrong,” Coonelly said in a statement. He arrived this morning in Bradenton, Fla., to join the Pirates at their spring training complex.

“I take full and sole responsibility for them. There is no excuse for ever driving under the influence of alcohol.”

This explains a lot about the Pirates. :-)

At least he didn't try to eat the bottle. :-)

Not that I care, but busted in PA or FLA?

And "drunken driving" vs. "driving with a BAC of at least .16"? Is the latter just an extra charge for being extra drunk?

Cop: We're going to book you on two counts relating to DUI.

Coonelly: Can't you give me a little special treatment? I'm the president of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Cop: Sure. Because you're the president of the Pirates, we're going to book you on four counts relating to DUI.

Congratulations, Coonelly, you now have something in common with Jim Bowden.

He should have his children taken away.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

They both traded for Lastings Milledge, they both signed Daniel Cabrera... this is not the first thing in common.

Pennsylvania, on I-279 just north of Pittsburgh. This happened back in December. I've been on that stretch of road many times and I can see how a drunk driver could get totally discombobulated there; there's a Park and Ride lot right by the interchange as well as the entrance to the HOV lanes and if you're not paying attention you can easily miss a turn.

Mozeliak wonders if it's possible to trade for a team president.

Driving 40 over the limit is a different charge than 5 over the limit. Attempted murder is a different charge than assault.

Degree does have meaning. He was a much larger danger to society being that drunk.

Most places, they charge separately for "driving impaired" and "driving with BAC over X." Never heard of the BAC # being set at .16, but maybe PA does that.

EDIT: but even if convicted of both "drunk" and "high BAC," you can only be sentenced for one of those, because criminal law is weird sometimes.

What was Theo's BAC when he agreed to Carl Crawford's contract? .16? 1.6? 16?

If you worked for Nutting, would you be sober?
