Pirates sign Craig Monroe

Pennsylvania has been on quite a roll since the Phillies won the World Series. Penn State football won the Big Ten. The Eagles and Steelers both reached the conference championship. Pitt basketball is #1. The Flyers are in first place. Now this!

The Pirates today agreed to terms with outfielder Craig Monroe and catcher Miguel Perez on minor league contracts with invitations to spring training.

Monroe, who will turn 31 next month, has a .253 career average and 112 home runs over eight seasons in Major League Baseball. That includes a .202 average, eight home runs and 29 RBIs in 2008 with the Minnesota Twins, who released him Aug. 8.

The article is unclear. Is the invitation as a player, or batting practice pitcher, or bullpen catcher?

The final piece!

I didn't know minor leagues were included.

Certainly another piece... Of something. But I'm not sure the Pirates are done bringing these "pieces" in.

Bummer. For a second I read "Craig" as "Manny" and "Monroe" as "Ramirez" and got all excited.

I think I probably saw like 40 Twins games last year, but I swear, I must have seen all 8 of Monroe's home runs. He was unstoppable in the games I saw! It's a good thing we have stats, or I'd assume he was the MVP. ;)

Look out Cincinnati!

You might be able to work this angle. Monroe can hire you as his personal trainer/good-luck charm.

Yesiree; new management are working wonder in Bucland!
Isn't it heartwarming to every Pirate fan to see such high profile players being added as the Bucs push forward to mediocrity?

Of course a signing like Monroe by the Pirates is an easy target for the lazy Primate. But in the past, the Bucs would have signed Craig Monroe to a 2yr, $6M deal.

I think mocking the Royals is a far better way to spend one's time at the moment.
