Pirates Sign Dutch Outfielder

They’re apparently trying to turn their organization into the cornucopia of nations like the 1990’s Dodgers.

The Pirates have signed a young Dutch player named Daan Cornelissen and will send him to Brisbane, Australia (?) to train.

Why to Australia?  I imagine they have some facilities there?  I know they opened a new facility in El Toro and added new full-time scouts for Taiwan, Australia, and Korea, but do they have a place in Brisbane?

NOTE:  Googling “pirates australia” leads to lots of news stories about real pirates off the coasts of Australia.

The owner jotted down a quick note to Neal Huntington: "Get a clutch outfielder", but, due to his illegible handwriting, mistakes were made.

That's brilliant.

The Pirates already signed a Dutch hitter, they just decided he should be a pitcher instead.

There's an MLB Australian Academy where players from other non-baseball countries have trained in the past, after signing with MLB teams. Like...remember the Red Sox's South African hotshot from the WBC, Erasmus?

According to this it can be used for non-Australian players when a player is having trouble getting a US visa.

The Pirates' main concern is that their new Dutch hitter will "clog" the basepaths.

i wonder why they don't just train in the Dominican then. odd.

But hey, I am all for expanding baseball. Australia would be the perfect host for some winter leagues.

Isn't it coming up for wintertime in Australia? Wouldn't it make more sense to wait until our autumn/their spring?

(RMc checks Wiki) Apparently, it doesn't get all that cold in Brisbane, even in winter: typical July highs/lows of 68/48 F...

I hope the kid can get a visa if that's the problem. Otherwise the Pirates will be Archimedes Screwed.
