The Pirates are prepared to trade outfielder Xavier Nady. And, if they cannot do so within the next few days, according to one official with direct knowledge of their plans, they are considering non-tendering him before the Dec. 12 deadline to offer salary arbitration… Such a move would be surprising on several levels, not the least of which is that Nady was productive in 2007, batting .278 with 20 home runs and 72 RBIs despite missing roughly 150 at-bats to various ailments.
...
General manager Neal Huntington, asked Friday if any of his arbitration-eligible players—particularly Nady—would be non-tendered, replied, “At this point, we plan to tender contract offers to all players requiring a tender.”
...
The Pirates have seemed determined to move one of two outfielders, Nady or Jason Bay, with an eye toward receiving prospects to replenish their barren minor-league system. But the potential return for Bay, by all accounts, has not been what some in management had envisioned.
The Pirates had sought to get two strong prospects, perhaps a pitcher and catcher, in the type of deal that successful, low-spending teams often make. But the Cleveland Indians are the only party known to have had firm talks with the Pirates, and their interest is not to that extreme.
...
“Right now, nobody wants Bay,” another American League executive said. “That will change if he shows he’s right again. But not now. He’s got to get out there and be Jason Bay again.”
...
nfielder Jose Castillo, is a virtual lock to be non-tendered, multiple sources say.

1. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: December 02, 2007 at 06:39 AM (#2631189)anybody have an explanation for this?
Bay's value just plummeted to ####!
true.
Indent fixed?
Nady, on the other hand, should be moved ASAP. His value, whatever it is, will never be higher. Even if the Pirates can get a B-grade hitting prospect, they should make that deal, because there are only 3 of those in the system.
As a Pirate fan, I'd take that.
If Huntington can't get value for Bay right now, he should just hold him and check again at the deadline.
As I said on the Pirate list serv, Bay would have to lose a limb to be worth less than he is now. Trading him right now is just crazy, especially before all the Santana-Cabrera-Jones drama plays out. No one is going to give you anything for Bay as long as they still have a shot at Jones/Rowand/etc for free. After everything is all said and done, then maybe someone gets a little desperate before spring training, but I still think that Jason will be at least up to Xavier Nady level by May, unless he has blurred vision in both eyes or gangrene or something. Then some team will be more than happy to take his cheap salary and his production.
If Bay is in the top 10 of NL hitters in May, then you can really make some hay.
And if he doesn't? He's going to be an expensive boat anchor.
And even if he does, it's harder to make a good deal in-season than it is in the off-season, because the trading partners tend to be fewer as the list of contenders is weeded down.
If the Pirates want to get imaginative, they ought to consider packaging Snell with Bay. Not that I expect the Pirates to do that.

That unfortunately was what I was wondering.
Most GMs do have a budget they have to stick to. Speculating...but could Huntington be running out of money? They spent..umm, $38M player payroll last year? And $5M of it was an old obligation to Jason Kendall...what if Huntington's had his budget lowered?
Nady is a serviceable player, and DID have a decent '07 season...and Boras is his agent? Maybe he wants $5M for '08, and Huntington just can't give it?
I've thought about it from the talent side, is it possible they want to get rid of Nady to open RF for McLouth? Bay-Duffy-McLouth, Morgan as the 4th? I just can't see that...I think McLouth deserves a shot, but not to the point of handing him RF. If someone in the organization suddenly DID get religion over McLouth, I would think pressing him to cover CF, with Bay and Nady on the corners and Duffy as the 4th/insurance, would yield the best results.
McCutchen ain't ready yet, so that's not it. It can't be for Kevin Thompson, he hasn't been with the Pirates long enough for anyone to open anything for him, including the clubhouse door.
Financial side seems to make sense, as always with the McClatchy Pirates it comes back to money? E$pecially if Bora$ i$ $till Nady'$ agent.
Snell and Bay for Brian Giles ..its a natural.
