Pitcher Analysis: Clayton Kershaw

A detailed analysis of 20-year old Clayton Kershaw’s mechanics and his minor league statistics. Is he the next Sandy Koufax that Dodgers’ fans are hoping for?

In short: No. He might be better.

Why can't we just celebrate him as a hot shot rookie and can't miss prospect instead of comparing him to a Cy Young and MVP winning Hall of Fame pitcher? The man has 0 career wins. If he still looks good after 5 years, we'll talk.

His 72-76 mph curveball was devastating, as he was liable to throw it in any count to any hitter, burying it in the dirt for swinging strikeouts and simply looping it over the plate for a get-me-over strike.

Kershaw was impressive, but he buried it in the dirt for a swinging strikeout once, against the opposing pitcher. Every other curveball he threw stayed up, and he had a hard time getting it into the zone. If he usually commands it better than he did last night, he's going to easily live up to the hype, but if he continues to throw the majority of them either up out of the zone or belt-high down the middle, he's going to get hit.

He's going to get hit this year without a doubt, that's what rookie pitchers do...especially 20 year old rookie pitchers.

he was throwing cheese when he went with the fastball, but he did have trouble finding the strike zone with the curve. but hey -- he was facing some mashers. albert is albert, and ludwick and schumacher and ankiel are all having pretty good seasons so far. and duncan is struggling, but he's no pushover. the kid did well, got a lot of support from the crowd.
