Pitching-poor Texas gets Rob Bell for two prospects - 6/16/01

The Reds exchanged Bell for OF Ruben Mateo. Jim Bowden apparantly doesn’t realize that you can only play three outfielders at one time.

Having gotten Rob Bell plus Michael Tucker and Denny Neagle for Bret Boone and Mike Remlinger from John Schuerholz a few years ago, he may be thinking he can pry out more pitching prospects from Schuerholz again by offering up Dmitri Young to play 1B or Alex Ochoa for LF in Atlanta. Schuerholz is nothing if not generous with his prospects in trades (See Chen, Bruce).

Interesting trade; I was surprised the teams had the guts to make it. I could easily see how this trade could horribly backfire on either team. The Rangers seem to have fit their needs better here, Lord knows they could use some quality young arms...Mateo does get hurt a lot and there have been negative reviews of his attitude - but a whole lot of young players get that reputation and outgrow it. The injuries may never go away, but remember how highly Mateo was rated as a prospect two years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if Mateo eventually breaks through and Bell (like any pitcher has the high risk of doing) gets hurt, and the Rangers are left with the short end of the stick. Or Bell could turn into a stud and Mateo could keep on getting hurt...I suppose Dmitri Young will be elsewhere in short order. The Braves situation mentioned before is the obvious fit; although, given the Red Sox-centric nature of this board, I wonder what all you Bosox fans might be willing to give for Dmitri's helpful bat...

Bowden as much said that he'll be moving some outfielders for pitching in the near term. He's got one of just about any type of OF you want, so it shouldn't be hard to find a match. He should be able to get rid of at least one or two at the deadline since ATL, NYM, MIN and SEA could all use at least one upgrade in the outfield and most of those teams have at least a little pitching to trade.

And looking at the Reds middle infield, it can't hurt to start gathering guys like Encarnacion to replace Larkin and Dawkins as they retire or get moved for ambitious salary demands. Anyone know anything about this kid?
