Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Burnett shelled for 12 runs; Barajas, Hurdle tossed in second inning

The St. Louis Cardinals pounded line drive after line drive off A.J. Burnett and racked up 12 runs in the first three innings. Rafael Furcal started the show with a leadoff single, and the Cardinals never slowed.

It ended as a 12-3 loss at Busch Stadium, one night after the Cardinals reached Charlie Morton and the bullpen for 10 runs.

Burnett (1-2) left after 2 2/3 innings. He allowed a career-high 12 runs on 12 hits, including two home runs to Carlos Beltran. Beltran had seven RBIs by the third inning. ...

Furcal and Jon Jay began the bottom of the first with consecutive singles between first and second base. Matt Holliday singled to left, scoring Furcal. ... Beltran hit the first pitch of the at-bat into the right-field seats for a three-run homer, and the Cardinals took a 4-0 lead. ...

Burnett began the second inning as he had the first, allowing the first three batters in the order to reach. Furcal singled and Burnett hit Jay in the foot before Holliday hit his second run-scoring single in as many innings.

Beltran followed with a single and another RBI. A double play and hard lineout ended the inning, but the Cardinals led, 7-1.

I saw this game. I also saw Burnett beat the Cardinals in his first start of the year, throwing 7 shutout innings. The difference in his stuff was ridiculous. To be blunt, last night, A. J. had nothing. He was throwing strikes, but high and not where the catcher(s) were setting up for them. The Cards, who did lead the league in runs last year, basically didn't have anyone other than the pitcher who could NOT hit him. It was like batting practice. I doubt that Burnett will be as good as he was in his first STL start, but he CERTAINLY can't be as bad as this one. I know it sounds silly, but there were two separate occasions where the STL sportscasters were openly speculating on why Clint Hurdle was leaving him in. This was in the second inning. They concluded that Hurdle had given up on the game, and was just trying to get his pitcher some work in, so he let him take 3 innings of punishment. If I were a Pirates fan, (I'm a Cardinal fan, just trying to be a good winner here), I'd write this game off and figure that Burnett will get much better with time. - Brock Hanke
