Players Weekend brings colorful names, gear

Please allow us to introduce you to All Rise, Stickman, La Potencia, Kiiiiid, Miggy, Corey’s Brother, Codylove, Tokki 2, Flaco Fuerte, KB, Tsunami, Cruz, EE, El Koja, Bringer of Rain, Big Kid, Wawindaji, Yoyo, Nado and Pappo.

You may know them better, respectively, as Aaron Judge, Chris Sale, Yoenis Cespedes, Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera, Kyle Seager, Cody Bellinger, Joey Votto, Chris Archer, Kris Bryant, Carlos Martinez, Giancarlo Stanton, Edwin Encarnacion, Adrian Beltre, Josh Donaldson, Bryce Harper, Hunter Pence, Yoan Moncada, Nolan Arenado and Adam Jones.

Major Leaguers will let their personalities and passions shine like never before when the newly created Players Weekend takes center stage during all games from Friday, Aug. 25, to Sunday, Aug. 27. Those are just 20 of the nicknames that players across all clubs will wear on their backs while sporting colorful, non-traditional uniforms featuring alternate designs inspired by youth-league uniforms.

MLB and the MLB Players Association announced jointly on Wednesday that Players Weekend will be a player-focused field festival of sorts, different than anything seen before at the top rung of the sport. In addition to nicknames on the backs of jerseys made by Majestic, players can wear and use uniquely colored and designed spikes, batting gloves, wristbands, compression sleeves, catcher’s masks and bats.

I'm disappointed that Encarnacion is "EE" instead of "Parrot Walker".

BTW, the best nickname is the one that Blue Jays left fielder Steve Pearce is going to wear: Pearce

Josh Phegley is PTBNL

Someone should wear Later.

Votto is "Tokki 2". Tokki is Korean for "rabbit".

I have no idea (he was born in 1983, not the Year of the Rabbit).
   5. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 09, 2017 at 04:06 PM (#5509995)
How the hell does Matt Szczur not have a nickname?
   6. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 09, 2017 at 04:11 PM (#5510004)

Votto is "Tokki 2". Tokki is Korean for "rabbit".

Shin Soo Choo is "Tokki 1". They're buddies. Eric Thames is "Sang Namja", Korean for "studly dude".

I'm disappointed he's not going to have "E5" on his jersey instead. Isn't that what everyone else knows him as? Even Urban Dictionary lists it.

I could've used a trigger warning before flashing back forward to this.

I heartily endorse this nickname even though I do not believe we are related.

This is a perfectly cromulent "fun" idea.

The 58 players that will not have a nickname

Why am I not surprised that Jon Lester is on this list?

I would like Anthony Rizzo's nickname to be Ratso, but I have a feeling I'll be disappointed.
   13. Tom Nawrocki Posted: August 09, 2017 at 05:03 PM (#5510114)
I mentioned this in the other thread, but the Rockies' Pat Valaika has the amazing nickname of "Patty Barrels" - but he's going with just "Valaika" on his jersey.
   14. JimMusComp likes Billy Eppler.... Posted: August 09, 2017 at 05:22 PM (#5510126)
I wish "Eye Chart" was still playing first base to see if he'd put that on his jersey.

And I agree with #10 - this is pretty stupid.

It's "Tony", which is what my wife calls him.

I've been wondering for a bit if our next project after renaming the stadiums would be one where we assign good nicknames to our favorite players. I like the system in place for the stadiums (one thread for suggestions, one where we vote for the final candidates). It seems like one that could get a lot of traction, especially since it doesn't take much to get a nickname added to a player's BB-REF page. (I remember a funny story from a few years ago, about an Angels blogger who was sad Mike Trout didn't have a cool old- school nickname, and so took to just constantly calling Trout "The Millville Meteor" until after a while it caught on enough for BBref to list it.)

Just a suggestion!
   17. Pat Rapper's Delight (as quoted on MLB Network) Posted: August 09, 2017 at 06:07 PM (#5510162)
Nothing would beat the Bill James Bermanisms of Scott "Would Your Sister" Leius or Jose "Jack" Offerman.
   18. Misirlou doesn't live in the restaurant Posted: August 09, 2017 at 06:32 PM (#5510171)
I'd like to see some ho,ages to great players of the past who had lesser known nicknames, like Biscuit Pants, Big Six, Barney, Beast...Giancarlo Stanton could be Black Mike.
   19. madvillain Posted: August 09, 2017 at 06:35 PM (#5510172)
Kris Bryant going with "KB", that's a bold move.

I still love Hawk's nickname for Lance Johnson -- "onedog".

I guess Utley's is an homage to Duke Snider. Any others?

Another weekend of clowniforms.

Because we haven't had enough of those yet this year.

Hate him if you must, but Hawk had his moments, and nicknames was a strength.

The Mooch does.
   27. DaVoice of DaPeople Posted: August 09, 2017 at 07:15 PM (#5510189)
The Royals choices are uninspired:

• Alex Gordon: "GORDO"
• Lorenzo Cain: "LO CAIN"
• Mike Moustakas: "MOOSE"
• Eric Hosmer: "PAPO"
• Alcides Escobar: "ESKY"
• Drew Butera: "THE DON"
• Brandon Moss: "MOSS DOGG"
• Danny Duffy: "BEAR"
• Neftali Feliz: "NEFFI"
• Kelvin Herrera: "H"
• Melky Cabrera: "MELKMAN"
   28. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: August 09, 2017 at 07:26 PM (#5510192)
I'm with Madvillain on this, I think it's a fun idea. Much better than those homage to whatever they are trying to honour uniforms like the camouflage or stars and stripes. Baseball is a game, it should be first and foremost, fun. Not be in the business of making political statements.

I do think Kyle Seager's "corey's brother" is pretty funny and I like Tsunami also just from the excerpt.

   29. Blanks for Nothing, Larvell Posted: August 09, 2017 at 07:36 PM (#5510198)
Oh, don't get me wrong -- this isn't a terrible idea on its own, but in the context of like six other extended weekends of clowniforms (*), it's a bit much.

More than a bit.

(*) Plus all-42, no names on back, day/night which has grown very stale.
   30. DaVoice of DaPeople Posted: August 09, 2017 at 07:59 PM (#5510206)
It's so wonderful that the players who refused to wear a nickname on their jersey includes Joe Mauer, Jon Lester, Brian McCann, Brett Gardner and Zack Greinke--the least fun guys in the game are living up to their reputations!
   31. Satan Says Posted: August 09, 2017 at 08:00 PM (#5510207)
The problem is it's contrived. Most players don't have nicknames, and you don't just get to pick one.

   34. Satan Says Posted: August 09, 2017 at 08:54 PM (#5510231)
If watching Brett Gardner run the bases is isn't your idea of fun, try roller derby.

He hasn't played 3B in 4 seasons, and hasn't started there regularly in 6 seasons.
   36. Random Transaction Generator Posted: August 09, 2017 at 10:12 PM (#5510260)
BTW, the best nickname is the one that Blue Jays left fielder Steve Pearce is going to wear: Pearce

Update: It seems that he'll actually have "The Train". The original listing was incorrect.
   37. PreservedFish Posted: August 09, 2017 at 10:17 PM (#5510263)
These nicknames are brutal.
   38. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: August 09, 2017 at 10:26 PM (#5510271)
I liked some of my high school nicknames better: "Mr. Baseball"; "Flyface"; and "Psycho". That last one was me, and it now seems appropriate that "Flyface"'s real name was Stephen Miller.

But the best one was one given to one of my book shop customers, and if you ever saw him you'd know why: "Hitler's friendly younger brother".

Cat Stevens reference?

Yeah, maybe a lot of the nicknames are uninspired, but "All Rise" is just about perfect for Aaron Judge. That would hold up in any era.

I also noticed at least two Key & Peele references: B-Lockay Treinen and A-A Ron Hicks.
   41. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: August 10, 2017 at 08:50 AM (#5510348)
If the player has a decent knickname, this is a decent idea. But, since 95% of players don't, it ends up being stupid.
   42. Random Transaction Generator Posted: August 10, 2017 at 08:59 AM (#5510353)
B-Lockay Treinen and A-A Ron Hicks

Awesome.

If someone actually went with a name from this list (especially the best one, Hingle McCringleberry), that would have been even better.
   43. Howie Menckel Posted: August 10, 2017 at 09:02 AM (#5510357)
Teixeira said on MLB Network that Gardner has a wickedly dry sense of humor, so sticking with his name will get him high fives for humor among his teammates - but he correctly guessed, per 30, that casual fans won't get it.

Judge will have "ALL RISE" on the back

Tex made the point that kids are watching the NBA and NFL, and this gimmick will appeal to them. that seems plausible. the customer is always right and all.

I was looking at the Rangers names and it appears that Alex Claudio goes by the name "Chomo". Chomo is a term used to describe a child molester in prison. This got pointed out several times on their Facebook picture, which I think has been removed last I checked.

Same stache, same hair, same face shape, same height and build, same pretty much everything, except that he wasn't a Nazi and he always was smiling. Bought and sold a ton of WWII books, however, and he even smiled when I told him what his designated book shop moniker was. He had to admit there was some resemblance.

But "Flyface" didn't really walk around with a face full of flies, and "Mr. Baseball" should've probably been called "The King of K's", since he struck out at a higher rate than Aaron Judge.
   49. Benji Gil Gamesh VII - The Opt-Out Awakens Posted: August 10, 2017 at 11:05 AM (#5510428)
The idea can be both a little silly but still good, which is the camp I'm in.

"All Rise" works for this concept just fine, but it's a catchphrase not a nickname.

Teixeira said on MLB Network that Gardner has a wickedly dry sense of humor, so sticking with his name will get him high fives for humor among his teammates - but he correctly guessed, per 30, that casual fans won't get it.
Count me in on that, I don't get how this qualifies as humor, dry or otherwise. (He's basically being Charlie from Dead Poet's Society, "exercising my right not to walk." That's fine but it's not funny.)

I feel like I read this before. Was there another promotion in the last year or so that had every team wearing names on their uniforms?
