I don't see either the Nationals or Mets helping out the Phils until either or both are close to elimination.

The Nats are done, they just don't realize it yet.

neither do the rest of us!

Phillies run differential +19; Nats run differential, +1. That 6 game lead the Phillies have on the Nats is going to close.

I'm not writing off the Nats, but noting that Philadelphia has the superior run differential is an odd way of arguing why Washington is going to gain ground.

Problem is there's no CF help out there. You've got some fly-catchers that can't hit but those don't usually cost you much -- Hamilton, Mallex Smith (terrible on both sides of the ball this year), Kevin Pillar seems to have lost any ability to hit and apparently hasn't been anything speical in the field in over a year now. Maybe if Boston hits another stinko stretch, Bradley might become available. If the White Sox fall off the pace, I suppose Leury Garcia might be available -- he's been a solid bench OF for the last 3 years and is either average (Rfield) or terrible (TZ) in CF. Same with the DBacks and Dyson.

Realistically to me it looks like Hamilton or bust if you want to "fix" the problem now.

if only the Phillies didn't already have a Hamilton-lite guy who is (finally) getting healthier. let's call him "Roman Quinn."

Matt Szczur, Diamondbacks

The former Chicago Cub and Villanova football and baseball star is tearing up the Pacific Coast League at the plate and he can play all three outfield spots. He has an out in his contract on June 15.

I thought he had retired. Huh, I guess not. Must have been thinking of another AAAA Cub from the the recent past.

I'm sort of surprised Ian Happ wasn't listed as a potential "available CFer" in this list. He's sure fallen off the map fast.

They will only want a 1 year/rest of the year player and contract; the franchise doesn't want to block Micky Moniack.

Brett Jackson is available.

As much as I enjoy JBJ with the leather, I would love for Boston to be able to get something for him via trade this year. He's insanely streaky with the wood and I don't think his hitting is going to bounce back much as he ages. Needless to say his fielding will be less effective as he gets older. Beside the Red Sox are going to have to pony up a truckload of funds if they want to keep Mookie around.

Do the Phillies want help in center field? They might as well keep Golden Boy Scott Kingery there and keep Cesar at 2B.

Kingery is back over 1.000 OPS. Let him play out there for a while and hope that Maikel Franco gets his head out of his ass. It's a long shot, but when the probable outcome is Billy Hamilton, why not?

This list is deep cuts.
   15. Davo Posted: June 11, 2019 at 10:34 PM (#5850796)
Hamilton can be had for very close to nothing, and the Royals badly need to move on from him. Billy has more value on a good team than a bad team. I hope this happens.

even if franco gets his head out of his ass, are you gonna trust him to keep it that way?
if only the Phillies didn't already have a Hamilton-lite guy who is (finally) getting healthier. let's call him "Roman Quinn."
anyone who trusts roman quinn to stay healthy does so at their own peril.

i'm not gonna say moniak is a non-prospect, but he's hit 14 HR in 1400 PAs, he has a 1:4 BB:K ratio, and his triple slash line in the minors is .258/.301/.378. that's not a typo: his MiLB OBP is .301.

FWIW, i'd just go after alex gordon. throw bruce in RF, move harper to CF and move kingery to 3B; suck up the defensive issues in exchange for a lineup that goes 8 deep.
   17. Davo Posted: June 11, 2019 at 11:17 PM (#5850807)
16- Alex Gordon can block any trade (he has 10/5 rights), and has said every time he’s been asked this year that he wants to stay in KC.

Of course, we all know players who’ve said that only to change their mind later, but.... I dunno, he’s spent his whole career in KC, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt.

I only just realized the article was a list. So a few comments ...

I knew I'd forgotten somebody and Martin was they guy I was trying to think of. But this year the offense has tanked while the defense hasn't really been there. But while the Indians 33-32 record isn't great, it puts them just 2 games out of the WC spot right now. That's of course part of the problem -- there are 10 AL teams and (arguably) 10 NL teams in the postseason mix (if such a thing exists yet).

Other names: Adam Jones can no longer play CF adequately. Margot has 3 more years control left after this, why would the Padres trade him. Merrifield was just signed to that extension this offseason and teams rarely move on that quickly (and as the article notes would cost a ton). Broxton is just lousy. Gordon is expensive, old and not quite a CF. Lagares, Gomez, Taylor -- none are actually good and their teams aren't yet interested in handing anything to the Phils. Marte I ignored because he has two incredibly cheap options coming -- no reason for the Pirates to move him unless they get a bundle. JaCoby Jones had an interesting season last year, solid so far this ... but has 4 years of control left, why would the Tigers move him?

   19. Davo Posted: June 12, 2019 at 11:41 AM (#5850966)
18- I’ve been seeing rumors that the Tigers are trying to move Matt Boyd, who also has 4 years left (and is much better than Jones)! I guess they’re looking at a huge rebuilding process if those guys aren’t part of the future.
   20. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: June 12, 2019 at 11:54 AM (#5850981)
I think the Pirates would be willing to move Marte, given how Reynolds has looked so far, but I don't think they'd do it for cheap.
