P.M. report: Pen names don’t include Bard - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN Boston

Things aren’t looking good for Daniel Bard.

Which brings us to Bard. His last two outings, including a stint in a minor league game Friday, did not go well, as Farrell acknowledged Saturday morning. Multiple scouts who have seen Bard said they do not see him being major league ready, and one said that the Sox should still be concerned whether he will ever regain the dominating form he showed in 2010 and 2011. His velocity topped out at 95 on Friday but generally sat at 92-93, still well below the high-90s velocity he regularly showed at his best.

Interesting in light of the question of what might go wrong with testing Chapman in the rotation.

I don't know how much light Bard can shed on anyone. Bard famously blew up in Lancaster as a 22-year-old starter, putting up a line of 13.1 IP with 22 walks, 5 wild pitches, 21 hits, and 23 runs allowed. (Only 15 earned!) It was a little surprising that after that Bard was able to put it together enough to be a good reliever. Point is that Bard had a prior history of spectacular disaster as a starter, while Chapman doesn't.

Hat tip to the headline writer, not bad.

So much for "the feel-good story of the Spring".
