Posnanski: 3,361 Words About The Royals

It might just be his magnum opus on the subject of the Royals.  An absolute must-read, maybe my favorite Poz entry this season.  Here’s a little teaser, guaranteed at least to get the full attention of the Primer Mets contingent:

I did a little study to try and come up with the most underachieving terrible team in the last 20 or so years — and there’s absolutely no question that team is: The 1993 New York Mets. No other team is even close. That Mets team lost 103 games — and they probably should not have lost 90. That Mets team hit more triples and more homers than their opponents and — this is actually quite incredible — they drew more walks than their opponents. That might not sound incredible for a 100-loss team, but it really is.

[...]

This will sound awkward but it seems to me that while there have been worse baseball teams over the last 25 years than the 1993 Mets, I’m not sure there has been a team worse at PLAYING BASEBALL than the 1993 Mets.

Which brings us to the 2009 Kansas City Royals. It would not be fair to say the Royals are underachieving the way those Mets did — this Royals team is bad by conventional measures too. They are on pace pace to draw 100-plus fewer walks, hit 40 or so fewer homers, crack 100 or so fewer hits.

But this Royals team reminds me of that 1993 Mets team in this way — they are not without talent. But they will do what’s necessary to lose games.

Kinda surprised that nobody cares to comment on this. It's a great article.

And this is a primey-worthy comment:

When I got my playstation, a friend of mine gave me a mlb game with the 2003 team on it. I decided to play it and buy a new one when the Royals would be decent on the game again. I am afraid that I will be an age where my thumbs no longer function properly when the opportunity finally arises.

It'll be interesting to read Poz's reaction if that Moore extension happens. Him and Rany.

I'm not sure what to add to it. It's quite epic in its scope.

Plus it's about the Royals, one of those teams I know little about.

My brothers had roughly the same opinion of
Toys
. They went in with high expectations, and left just stunned by the awfulness.

I lucked out and never saw it.

I kinda liked it at the time, one of the first movies I saw in a theater.

I've actually had two English teachers who loved it, and have both brought it up repeatedly and even shown it in class.

There's exactly one reason to watch Toys: Joan Cusack.

Actually, Joan Cusack is really the only reason to watch pretty much anything she's in. I mean, Runaway Bride? Mr. Wrong? Addams Family Values? (She even managed to make School of Rock watchable, even though Jack Black tried his level best to ruin it.)

My wife wants Joan Cusack to play her in "RMc: The Movie", which is a tad awkward, since I wanted John Cusack to play me. (Gonna have to use a body double or two, I guess...)

By and large I agree, although Arlington Road (or is it Arlington Drive?) would have stood up without her.

I still stand by Matrix II and Matrix III being the most disappointing movies of all-time. God they were awful.

I agree with Pos, this is the worst Royals team for the reasons he mentions. I had zero expectations in 2005. I had cautious optimism about this year. I thought they would at least win 78 games or so and if a few things bounced their way - Greinke having a Cy Young type year, Banny pitching like he did in 2008, Butler emerging as a .850 OPS player, we'd have a chance to contend. Well those things happened, but everything else sucked.

I agreed with Poz last night, but after watching Zack again today...

Watching him is a blast, makes up for an awful lot.

I kinds like those funny bad team too, like when Harvey kept getting hit with the ball and stuff.

At least if you're a Royals fan you ge Poz & Rany (and Neyer in absentia), as a Jays fan I get Dick Griffin & Drunk Jays Fans (and the KLaw's occasional snark). So it could be worse.

Your wife thinks about who would play her in a movie about you?

I've always thought John Cusak was massively overrated and that his sister only had any career at all because of his success. I know I'm in the minority on the first one, but I didn't think I was on the 2nd.

Meh, I never got the Joan love. Gross Pointe Blank didn't need her. Hell, and it had the rare troika, as IIRC it included the ever-mysterious and hard to find Jane, as well.

Gonna voice my timid love for Toys (7 out of 10?), as a kid who had always imagined camouflaging himself as an actual piece of furniture. What a strange kid I was and remain.
   22. Baldrick Posted: August 31, 2009 at 04:56 PM (#3309794)
I think the second Matrix movie is substantially better than either of the other two. The first is the germ of an idea stretched out intolerably long. The second actually delivers - and most importantly poses a lot more questions than it tries to answer. The third is total garbage.

Can anything ever top Phantom Menace as the most disappointing movie ever?

I mean, seriously, even if you went it to thinking, "It'll probably suck, I mean, come on." It was just so far off the radar of expectation in terms of quality. Even for people who thought it would be terrible.

Toys is butally awful. The Toy is also brutally awful. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are fantastic.

So...there ya go.

It even had an awesome trailer. Actually, all three of them did. George Lucas makes great trailers.

I got sucked into thinking that Episode II was going to be good based on the trailer. By the time Sith was about to come out, I'd figured it out already and refused to get my hopes up, good trailer be damned.

The Detroit Lions went 4-0 in preseason last year.

No, nothing can, but you'll never get everyone to admit the obvious because otherwise we'd all just stare at each other and there's no fun in that.

I thought John Cusack was pretty good as Buck Weaver in Eight Men Out. His "Damn, if you don't feel like you're gonna live forever" monologue when describing what he loves about baseball was memorable. Also, if you were a teen or in college when they came out, Better Off Dead and The Sure Thing are iconic movies (and JC performances).

It was fine, provided that you:
(a) weren't a Star Wars obsessive, and
(b) could beat the memory of Jar Jar out of your head.

I liked the original trilogy, and enjoyed The Phantom Menace. However, I will admit that it was only enjoyable, which is a fairly lukewarm statement of support, and that I still haven't bothered to see the second and third installments, possibly because of the lack of a truly gripping story in The Phantom Menace.

The most dissapointed I've ever been with a film was with North. Rob Reiner as director, a ton of famous performers in the cast, and yet it turned into an absolute disaster of a film.

In retrospect, I probably should have read a review or two before I went.

Phantom Menace ruled. Jar-Jar Binks was an inspired character, a wonderful comic foil, and it's a damn shame that no one seems to realize it.

What I find amazing about the two trilogies is that Chewbacca and R2D2 are more interesting than any of the characters introduced in the prequels. How the hell did that happen? The two of them together sound like my cat when he has the crazies and he jumps onto my keyboard.

Joan Cusack helped make Toy Story II less of a crime against nature. It was actually pretty good, as sequels to great movies are wont not to be.

Toy Story 2 is better that the original, IMHO. Toy Story 3 is in the works, but I'm skeptical. I'm not sure what other kinds of existential crises they can come up with for toys. They've got the fear of replacement and of abandonment covered, so what else is there? Are they going to create some kind of Beckett-ian hell on earth as they all get put in a cardboard box and stuffed into the attic for eternity? That would be kinda cool, but I'm not sure it's what Disney is hoping for...

David Lynch needs to direct this movie. It would be amazing.

There was a game against the Twins a few weeks ago that was write out of Poz's column. Billy Butler on first, ninth inning, one out, down by a run. There was a hard single hit into the right-center gap. Butler stopped at 2b despite the Twins practically granting him third. Next batter hits a deep flyball that would have scored Butler to tie the game. Next batter also is retired- game over. Just awful baserunning.

Oh, and nothing will be worse than the RF foibles by Josh Anderson and Princess Willie against the Twins 2 weeks ago. I mean, seriously. If you didn't see it, go find the video on MLB.com. Just pathetic beyond belief.

But Menace served one of its purposes very well, rekindling the excitement for the franchise you hadn't been able to experience for many years.

No, that's that the Special Edition releases in 1997 did. They got people talking about them and got tons of people out to the movieplex.

Phantom Menace was TERRIBLE, really, when you take away the nostalgia, and Harrison Ford the other Star Wars movies weren't all that great.

Didn't Ford ad-lib a bunch of lines in the originals because Lucas' script was so bad?

And Phantom Menace would have been OK if not for Jar Jar Binks. Lucas may as well have got Al Jolson up there in blackface.

8 players have started at least 10 games and finished at least 19 games after Anthony Young did it in 1993

Juan Acevedo, 1999 (21 GF, 12 GS)
Tim Wakefield, 1999 (28 GF, 17 GS)
Octavio Dotel, 2000 (25 GF, 16 GS)
Willis Roberts, 2001 (20 GF, 18 GS)
Byung-Hyun Kim, 2003 (35 GF, 12 GS)
Dustin Hermanson, 2004 (26 GF, 18 GS)
Curt Schilling, 2005 (21 GF, 11 GS)
Seth McClung, 2006 (20 GF, 15 GS)

What a great cross section of pitchers.

Rick Camp started 21 games and finished 20 games in 1982.
