HOW WILL THE ANGLES LOSE THIS POSTSEASON?
By being obtuse.

Very acute.

Actually, A's stands for Athletics, not Angles, and here's how I see it playing out:

A's scratch out two runs against Morton and one against the bullpen to lead 3-1 after 6. Melvin brings in Jesus Luzardo for the next two innings; someone runs into one but Luzardo is otherwise unhittable. With the score 3-2 into the ninth, Liam Hendriks follows in the grand tradition of Billy Koch and Keith Foulke by imploding, giving up three runs in a sustained rally to make it 5-3 Tampa. The A's get a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth and lose 5-4.

Can't wait for tomorrow!

Watching the NLWC at a sports bar tonight.

If the Nats win, I will splurge on the $25 post-season MLB streaming plan and wrangle cable credentials from someone.

If Max can keep the batted balls inside the park, I think the Nats have a good chance to win. For once Deivi is doing things in a smart way, starting Max, using good relievers to get him out of a jam, then starting Strasburg with the next clean inning to go as far as possible.

I'll be curious to see how Lorenzo Cain gets around on his questionable ankle. He's starting in CF, but he might have to come out of the game if it acts up on him.

HOW WILL THE ANGLES LOSE THIS POSTSEASON?
in a very protracted manner

In 90 degree heat

Hold your horses there, he hasn’t successfully caught a pitch yet.
   16. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:24 PM (#5885149)
It's sort of a no-lose for me here. I want Milwaukee to lose for being so unbeatable at the end, but I want the Nationals to lose for being in my division.

I'm a winner no matter what!

HOW WILL THE ANGLES LOSE THIS POSTSEASON?
They hang the rest of their coaching staff out to dry after just one injury-filled season.

Oh, boy.
   19. Red Voodooin Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:29 PM (#5885154)
Wow. Postseason performance may well end up being a huge black mark against Max when his place in history is discussed.

That's baseball, Suzyn.

That HR by Thames was such a juiced ball special. Low, outside, and not hit squarely. Of course, Thames is jacked so he's plenty strong enough of his own.
   22. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:34 PM (#5885160)
I'm wondering how much heat Davey Martinez will face tomorrow if the Nats lose tonight. Scherzer had not been good for a month, while Strasburg and Corbin had been very good.
   23. Where have you gone Brady Anderson? Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:41 PM (#5885165)
I could see Martinez being let go if they lose tonight. I certainly don’t have much confidence in him.

In other news, I went to baseball reference earlier and there were two pictures of Stephen Strasburg up top. It’s definitely an omen of some sort.
   24. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:44 PM (#5885167)
It's the mentality of "go down with your best", even if the "best" hasn't been best for a long time. Personally I don't care if the Nats win or lose, but starting Scherzer didn't seem like such a brilliant decision.
   25. JJ1986 Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:45 PM (#5885168)
Cameraman and Ernie Johnson both thought that was a homer.
   26. Tin Angel Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:47 PM (#5885170)
Right, but imagine if Martinez started Strasburg and he didn’t pitch well? He’s kinda screwed either way.
   27. salvomania Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:49 PM (#5885171)
Didn't realize how ineffective Scherzer has been since the All Star break... only had 1 QS (out of 8 starts) and a 4.81 ERA with 9 homers allowed in 43 ip.

   28. Bote Man sez Davey is MoY Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:53 PM (#5885172)
Right, but imagine if Martinez started Strasburg and he didn’t pitch well? He’s kinda screwed either way.

Strasburg has better post-season stats than Max, plus Stras has been nails in his last few starts. Max...not so much.

Max is due to bat, so it's PH time.
   29. Bote Man sez Davey is MoY Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:55 PM (#5885175)
That home run hit by Suzuki would've gone out with the juiced ball in 83 degree temperatures, but since Braun caught it I must assume that non-juiced balls are being used tonight, as theorized by Maury Brown.
   30. bfan Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:55 PM (#5885176)
Brew Crew need to bring Hader in now, and lock this down. Worry about tomorrow's game, tomorrow.

Right, but imagine if Martinez started Strasburg and he didn’t pitch well? He’s kinda screwed either way.
Scherzer has a wellspring of fan good will that Strasburg doesn't. Scherzer "deserves" the start based on his history with the franchise, and most fans would have probably started him as well.

Strasburg has been nothing short of awesome over his last 100 innings. Since June, Corbin was one of the best pitchers in baseball. I feel like Scherzer was the easy narrative choice, but the other two were better choices, but required more courage from Martinez to go there.
   32. JJ1986 Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:57 PM (#5885178)
I would not have let Scherzer bat.
   33. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: October 01, 2019 at 08:57 PM (#5885179)
I can't believe they let Scherzer bat.
   34. phredbird Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:00 PM (#5885182)

I feel like that was the first fly ball I've seen all year that went less far than I initially expected.
   37. phredbird Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:01 PM (#5885185)

that one wasn't a pre-juice ball.
   38. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:03 PM (#5885186)
Over/under on number of runs scored on homers before the first non-homer run?

NOOOOOOOPE! Most smart fans that I follow on Twitter were hoping for Strasburg.

And, of course, since Deivi put Stras on the WC roster he got him stretching for a bit in the 2nd inning, then sat him down. Then bats Max for himself. He has done this enough times that it is a typical pattern: let the starter hit for himself when he should've been PH for, then pull him in the next inning when he pitches into trouble.

They also could have turned it into a bullpen game and just started Strickland or Rodney.

Strange new world where a manager publicly states that 4 innings is the "best case scenario" for his starter, and when the guy achieves his 4 good innings, he celebrates in the dugout.
   46. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:23 PM (#5885199)
Woodruff pitching great, and probably a better hitter at this point than Shaw, but that’s not The Script.

Washington Nationals @Nationals
The emergency alert system at Nationals Park malfunctioned and caused a false alarm during today’s NL Wild Card Game.

There is no emergency at the ballpark.

Well, I wouldn't say that there is *NO* emergency at this point.
   48. Jeremy Renner App is Dead and I killed it Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:25 PM (#5885201)
45–Woody has only pitched a max of 2 innings since coming back from injury. With minors done no chance to get stretched out in game situation. Team determined his max load was about what he did tonight

Is this in regards to CC and Woodruff? Woodruff was out for 2 months and has pitched twice since coming off the IL, both were 2 IP. I agree that CC should be ecstatic he got 4 IP out of him.
   50. PreservedFish Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:34 PM (#5885205)
I was not aware that Woodruff was fresh off an injury.

I like this Suter kid. They can't stop talking about how fast he works.
   53. Baldrick Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:44 PM (#5885209)
The camera keeps trying to cut away to meaningless garbage but Suter is ready to pitch again in six seconds so they cut back to him mid-windup. It's both wonderful and terrible.

There has to be some penalty for bad challenges.

oo. closer than it looked at first blush.
   58. PreservedFish Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5885214)
Well, Suter is slowed down by the hitter. I bet if you match Suter and whoever the fastest batter is, they get the AB done in seconds.

Oh, come on, Counsell. Obviously the right call. There should be a penalty for ridiculous challenges.

Coke to JJ.
   60. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:48 PM (#5885216)
I am pro replay, but the challenge system is stupid and there's no reason this should take this long on such an obvious play.
   61. PreservedFish Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:50 PM (#5885217)
I'm surprised that Suter is facing multiple righties here. Seems like we're in ROOGY territory already. Not upset about it, to be clear.

   63. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:50 PM (#5885219)
He just keeps pitching and doesn’t give Counsell a chance to take him out.
   64. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:53 PM (#5885221)
Did they use the CGI ‘youthening’ technology on Will Smith in Gemini Man, or is he actually aging that ridiculously well?

EDIT: The former. That’s comforting, although the ‘old’ version of him looks at least 10 years younger than he actually is too.
   65. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:53 PM (#5885222)
They still fk up the replay system in volleyball but the players are great regulators in controlling coaches from iffy challenges.
   66. Lassus Posted: October 01, 2019 at 09:54 PM (#5885223)
That was a wonderfully Metsian inning by the Nats there.
   67. PreservedFish Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5885225)
I also missed Pomeranz's quick transition to shutdown reliever.
   68. JJ1986 Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:03 PM (#5885226)
Drew Pomeranz, ace reliever, is still weird to me.
   69. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:05 PM (#5885227)
So one more inning for pomeranz and 2 for hader?
   70. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:05 PM (#5885228)
It happened exactly 7 minutes after I waived him from my fantasy team.
   71. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:08 PM (#5885230)
Drew Pomeranz was the only player in the WS who didn't get into a game last year -- even the game that lasted 18 innings. He faced 100 batters for the Brewers this year, struck out 45, and he's taking the mound for the bottom of the 6th.
   72. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5885231)
I take it they are explaining where he's supposed to stand in the box and what to do with the bat.
   73. JJ1986 Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:09 PM (#5885232)
Counsell should have double-switched out Braun if he wanted Pomeranz to go 2.
   74. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:10 PM (#5885233)
73 - agree, and that's incredibly obvious in retrospect.
   75. Jeremy Renner App is Dead and I killed it Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:13 PM (#5885234)

He's due to blow one in a big way. And the Brewers are due to get their hearts ripped out of them. And the Nats are due to actually have something go right for them in October.

Probably none of those things happen, but they are "due".
   78. Tulo's Fishy Mullet (mrams) Posted: October 01, 2019 at 10:25 PM (#5885238)
Hader’s last outing is one reason they are in this game and possibly not heading to Atl. Of course he was brilliant those other times.
