Postseason OMNICHATTER - 10/2/2019 - Rays vs. A’s

Technically it’s a UNICHATTER given there’s only one game. Whatever.

LET'S GO OAKLAND

Well, there's another game we could chatter about. Game 2 of the Atlantic League championship series is today. The Long Island Ducks lead 1-0 after a win last night over the Sugarland Skeeters.

There's a free video feed at http://liducks.com/home

Rays with a couple lineup surprises.

Melvin announced that Davis will start at DH for the A's. I am sort of lukewarm on this. It sucks to have your DH project out to maybe a .700 OPS, but on the flip side, I don't think plan B would be all that great either (probably Pinder or Grossman in LF with Brown at DH, which is not really much of an improvement).

ANALYSIS

NL Division Series TWO preview, using team composite stats for 2019. This obviously does NOT address some key areas; injuries, and increased or decreased playing time for some key spots (top few SP, top few relievers); change in team makeup or momentum.

I will assess three primary questions comparing the team’s offense to its pitching and defense:
1) Does the team generate more hits than they allow? Primary stat are team batting AVG, and KOs.
2) Does the team get more free bases than they allow? Main stat is walk% = OBP minus AVG.
• I know, it’s bad math to subtract ratios with dissimilar denominators. It’s a small thing tho.
3) Does the team hit with more Power than they allow? Primary stat is ISO; slugging minus AVG.

NLDS2 Dodgers-Nationals
(1) Dodgers: Team AVG is 257; allowed is 224. They KOd 1339 times, while KO-ing 1499 batters.
Nats: Team AVG is 265; allowed is 244. They KOd 1308 times, while KO-ing 1511.
Very small advantage to LA

(2) Dodgers: Team Walk% = .080; allowed is .067
Nats: Team Walk% = .077; allowed is .070.
Very small advantage to LA

(3) Dodgers: Team ISO is 216; allowed is 158 (best in MLB playoffs).
Nats: Team ISO is 189; allowed is 168.
Big Advantage, LA.

The teams have similar strengths, except LA has more power and better prevention of the big flys. Given the un-ready Nats rotation, I expect the Daahgers to garner about 10 extras bases in the series.

Grossman in LF, not Brown for the A's. Well, contingent on that (which isn't crazy), I would definitely have Brown over Davis at DH. Not a huge deal, Brown could be useful off the bench later.
   6. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: October 02, 2019 at 06:05 PM (#5885609)
I like both these teams and would love to see both do well. So I'm torn on who to root for; unlike yesterday, I had a clear preference for the Nats (not that I dislike the Brewers per se).
   7. PreservedFish Posted: October 02, 2019 at 06:30 PM (#5885612)
Genuinely excited about this game. Two very interesting teams.
   8. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 02, 2019 at 06:33 PM (#5885613)
Likewise. I'm looking forward to watching. I'm not sure if I think what the Rays are doing -- succeeding by using players in ways that seem to minimize their chances of becoming well-recognized stars -- will be great for baseball if/when many other teams start following suit. But it's interesting and innovative.
   9. Der-K: at 10% emotional investment Posted: October 02, 2019 at 07:09 PM (#5885617)
On the flip side of Davis v Grossman, Tampa has Tommy Pham as the DH (instead of Meadows or Garcia), despite an 8 assist - no error season and enough range to have played center before going to the Rays (though his range numbers this year (where he only played left) were bad).

At the risk of angering Nasty Nate again, I just listened to the post-game interview of Juan Soto in the champagne-soaked clubhouse in which he declared that he stopped to get in a rundown to allow Rendon to score. The throw came in to 3B ahead of him, then he got in the rundown, so Grisham chose to throw to 3B and not home plate.

Here's a StatCast plot of everything that happened during that Soto hit, good luck deciphering it.
   11. Lassus Posted: October 02, 2019 at 07:17 PM (#5885620)
As a former resident of the Bay Area, I must root for the A's. Sorry, Ybor City.

So he actually did think they would try to get him instead if they had a chance of preventing the go-ahead run? That's ridiculous.

I'm pulling for the Athletics, if for no better reason than the dulcet tones of Ken Korach on the radio.
   14. It's regretful that PASTE was able to get out Posted: October 02, 2019 at 07:39 PM (#5885627)
I'm late to the party having just watched yesterday's game this evening, but: man, after two batters it was painfully obvious to everyone except Craig Counsell that Hader had nothing. I know there are clubhouse considerations that Hader's earned the right, etc. etc., but it's just awful mismanagement to stand there with your hands in your pockets and watch a pitcher who's got nothing blow the season. (And besides that, it's Josh Hader, not Mariano Rivera.)

Re: the Soto play, Rendon would have scored if Roberto Clemente had possessed Grisham's body just after the error, Rendon is blazing fast and was rounding third as Grisham let it fly. He was gone. Soto may well have believed he was sacrificing himself to ensure Rendon scored, but if so, it was unnecessary.

IMO the Grisham error was terrible and will haunt him for the rest of his life, but if he fields it cleanly two runs still score and Counsell probably still doesn't pull Hader, so the Brewers were very likely going to lose regardless. It's a shame because Grisham was excellent at the plate.

I'm enjoying this game with the makeshift projector & futon setup in my unfinished attic.

Attic baseball, baby

The room is basically unusable in the winter and summer, but right now it's perfection.

I didn't realize there was a Lawry's in Chicago - the original in Los Angeles is absolutely classic. San Francisco has The House of Prime Rib, which I totally adore.
