PPG:  Kovacevic:  Snell’s Elbow to be Examined

Pirates starter Ian Snell will be examined tomorrow for what he and the team described as right elbow irritation after an 8-5 loss to Toronto this afternoon before 22,983 at PNC Park, as well as a chance at a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays.

And after that contract (which I still think is NOT comparable to Adam Wainwright’s)!

The oddity if the attendance of 22,983.  It was Italian Day at the ballpark, Sunday afternoon interleague game, the Pirates going for the sweep against Toronto after two pretty good games.  Rain in the forecast probably kept some people home, and they average under 8,600/game for the season, so maybe I should be happy with the turnout.  But, really, is the occaisonal sellout/near-sellout too much to ask for?  We’ll see Tuesday-Thursday with the Yankees in town.

The Pirates have bad karma. Hope Snell turns out okay.

Fogg, Kip Wells, Duke, Gorz, Snell... woe betide the young Pirate starter who experiences a modicum of success. My throwing UCL hurts just thinking about those guys.

Also: Kris Benson, Ryan Vogelsong, John VanBenschotten, Bryan Bullington, Sean Burnett, Bobby Bradley, Brad Lincoln, Phil Dumatrait. The Pirates have had some talented pitchers come to grief in their care.

So, did any Italians play in the game for either team?

Most BTFers may know this already - but Kris Benson before the injuries was a Grade A pitching prospect.

Don't look now but the Pirates are three runs away from being 5th in all of baseball in runs scored.

Just looking at the statlines, this surprises me. 129/50 K:BB in 156IP at AAA before his callup? AA had a better K rate (but not stellar), but a worse BB rate. I dunno - I'm not sure injuries are what derailed him.
