Prep star Byron Buxton the most talented, intriguing draft prospect

He’s the next Ichiro!

So far this baseball season, Buck has hit only two home runs. This is surprising to some, perhaps even a red flag for teams that question his ceiling and also wonder about the level of competition in rural Georgia. But all you have to do is spend one day in Baxley and you’ll see Buck’s ridiculous power during BP. Stick around for a game and you’ll see that Buck, who hit 14 home runs as a sophomore, doesn’t get many pitches to hit. “And he’s not going up there, trying to hit home runs,” said Smith. “There’s no doubt there’s power there.”

Yeah, I agree that's a red flag. Better let him fall to #3.

I heard he has a troubling past involving bicycle theft.

Where are they hosing him down?

As someone who spent 18 years in Baxley, GA, I can only offer my sincere advice that no matter how good Bryon Buxton projects to be, that is absolutely no good reason to spend a day in Baxley, GA.

What are some good sites to use to follow the draft prospects?

The most believable thing about this article: a guy named Byron Buxton hails from a town called Baxley in rural Georgia. Is this a real prospect or a James Thurber short story?

Oh, I assure you, he's real. And they call him Buck, not Byron.

Byron Buxton from Appling High
A beautiful balm to an old scout's eye
Bursting with power, a high OBA
Byron Buxton from Baxley, G.A.

BA's the best, if you can afford to subscribe. I also like Baseball Prospect Report, which has an irritating interface but also some good video.

I think Perfect Game is actually slightly better at amateurs (their focus) than BA, though BA is a great source and publishes more free content. Sickels is supposed to publish his top 100 today (likely before the end of the week at least), Bullpen Banter should be putting some pieces out soon, and I do imagine Baseball Prospectus will at least publish a top 50 or 100. Project Prospect tend to draw different conclusions due to their approach but I really like Lincoln's work. Recently someone turned me onto Mark Anderson's site at Baseball Prospect Nation and he has a lot of good reports.

While some of the sites I used to use don't seem to be around anymore, there is still a lot of information out there about the draft.

So you're saying that this draft is going to end with Byron Buxton taking the other draftees out into the woods one by one until only the grandma is left?

I love that story.

A good prospect is hard to find.

I suspect he's still good country people, but I ain't letting my daughter go up to the hayloft with him.

If he does run off with her leg, it will only be because he needs a new bat.

I think they pitched around Billy Beane his senior year in high school, but it worked out fine.
