Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-17-2011

A recap of game three of the World’s Series, from the October 17, 1911 edition of the Toledo News-Bee:

NINTH INNING.

Philadelphia—Herzog threw out Collins.  BAKER HIT INTO THE RIGHT FIELD GRANDSTAND FOR A HOME RUN.  Murphy was safe on Herzog’s fumble.  He went to second when Herzog threw the ball over Merkle’s head.  Davis sacrificed, Meyers to Merkle.  Herzog threw out Barry. —ONE RUN

And thus, a nickname was born.

Ah yes, who can forget "Fumbler" Herzog? Or "Davis the Sacrificer"?

Herzog cursed out Kinski. Kinski threw machete at Herzog.

THT also notes the centennial anniversary of a Hall of Famer's nickname.

Plus other items having an anniversary: Pujols murders that Lidge pitch - just murders it; David Roberts steals second - and the comeback is on; Robin Ventura hits the longest walk-off single in postseason history; World Series game postponed on account of earthquake; the only member of Canton and Cooperstown dies; Dick Williams thumbs his nose at Finley; NL teams agree to give Houston & NYC teams; and Ban Johnson resigns.

1964 The Yankees fire manager Yogi Berra, who led them to the World Series in his first (and only) season managing them

Berra managed the Yankees in 1984 and part of 1985.

Can't remember Charles O being called "Chuck", ever. Charlie, yes.

Misirlou - Yeah, I knew that one, but was thinking from the p.o.v. of 1964. He'd only managed them once then. Sorry for any confusion on that one.

Chuck, Charles - yeah, guess I shouldn't have done that.

I'll make some notes about it in the comments section at the article itself.

I like how a middle of the order hitter sacrificed a runner to third with one out.

Meh. The guy batted .197 and slugged .273 on the year. A better point would be to ask why he was playing in the first place.

Late-80s pitcher for the White Sox. Pretty cromulent pitcher with a temper. Brother to MLB pitchers Pascual and Carlos.

It looks like Davis was the backup 1B. Stuffy McInnis was the regular 1B, but must have got hurt in the Series as he played 1 game and hand no at bats.

The Netherlands beat Cuba 2-1 to win the World Cup (Canada took bronze after its match v. the US was rained out) - this is probably the finest moment in the history of European baseball (granted, a bunch of the Dutch guys are from the NA).

Melido didn't have a temper that I recall. Pascual was kind of a flake IIRC.

Well, either he sucks and should be batting eighth or he's a guy who led the league in HR four times and is sacrificing with one out. Either way it's odd.
