Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-11-2018

Washington Herald, October 11, 1918:

James E. Gaffney, former owner of the [Braves]...said he would take back the franchise next Monday unless the present owners of the club met their obligations. There is a considerable sum due Gaffney for rental of Braves Field, while the present owners also are behind in the payment of interest on bonds held by Gaffney and associates.
...
Percy Haughton resigned as president off the club to accept a commission as a major in the chemical warfare service. The club since then has been without a real executive, its affairs having been left in the hands of Walter Hapgood, its business manager.

Haughton, a former Harvard football coach, was the public face of an ownership group that included a bunch of Boston-area bankers, so it’s not like they couldn’t afford to pay interest on bonds. Anyway, cinema mogul George Grant bought the team in early 1919. He lost a bunch of games, lost a bunch of money, fired the manager that led the Miracle Braves to the 1914 World Series championship, and sold two useful pitchers to his friend John McGraw for more than $150,000. Coincidentally (or not), the Giants won four pennants in a row from 1921-1924.

Ty Wigginton was a regular, playing in at least 111 games, for nine seasons in the major leagues. It's kind of impressive that he was only able to get up to 2.8 WAR.

Boy, did I ever hate him when he played for the Rockies. His specialty was putting on an especially tortured grimace after he struck out on another slider in the dirt.

One pitcher celebrating his birthday today who isn't on the birthday team is one who was called "the best pitcher in the world who isn’t in the major leagues" by the Japan Times earlier this year. Yomiuri Giants pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano is 29 years old today. He has a record of 76-42 in his six seasons in NPB, with an ERA of 2.17. He was Central League MVP in 2014, won the Sawamura Award in 2017, and has made the All-Star team in each of his six seasons. This season he was 15-8 with a 2.14 ERA, the latter of which led the Central League.

He has announced a desire to one day come to MLB; in his early years expressing this desire was little tricky, because his uncle Tatsunori Hara was the Giants manager when he started playing. After Hara stepped down after the 2015 season, it looked as if that might clear the way for Sugano to eventually come to MLB, but just yesterday it was announced that the Giants have asked Hara to return as manager for 2019. Hara has said, "I told the team I will think about it positively". Family ties are regarded as very important in Japan, and it would be very hard for Sugano to leave if his uncle is the team's manager. Sugano is signed through the 2021 season; the Giants are reluctant to use the posting system. So whether he'll ever actually come to MLB is a question mark at this time...

Will White, 1879: 680 IP (the all-time record), 120 ERA+, 3.8 bWAR.

It must have been the 254 UER that knocked him down a peg or two.

Buttercup Dickerson and Mikado Milt Smith were never teammates, unfortunately for Gilbert and Sullivan fans...
