Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-12-2018

Chicago Eagle, October 12, 1918:

There is now some talk in England, where baseball is invading the sport domain, of a sort of compromise game which should embody some features of cricket and baseball…The two pastimes would mix about as well as oil and water.

But English critics of baseball continue to offer suggestions, and one of them in a recent issue of an English periodical bewails the fact that the baseball “foul” is not allowed to figure in the run getting. He thinks it should be as important a factor in the American game as the “snick” in cricket, to which it corresponds. Here is how he puts it:

“The snick or corner stroke is undoubtedly the most spectacular hit in baseball; indeed, it is practically the only spectacular stroke, except the hit out of the ground, which occurs once in a blue moon.

This is an amazingly terrible idea. It’s horrible, this idea.

It looks like Chass is still blogging away. From his latest article:

Brian Cashman is not on vacation. When I called him Wednesday, with questions about Boone and Girardi, he wasn’t in his office, his secretary said, but she didn’t say he was on vacation. She said she would give him the message.

As I expected, Cashman didn’t call back...

In Cashman's defense, he probably gets calls from bloggers all the time. He's a busy man.

Ok, I just read 4 Chass columns. Yes, he's mostly bitter and sad, but there were two surprises of newfangled thinking:

1. He would vote for DeGrom for CYA, wins be damned.

2. Even more surprising, he blames Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone for their hidebound thinking in starting CC Sabathia instead of doing a Rays-style bullpen game!

Today's Google Doodle is about Roberto Clemente as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. I don't know if it's connected, but yesterday was the anniversary of his last game.

SP: Erv Brame (5.5 WAR)

Erv Brame is one of those pitchers who has more WAR from his hitting than his pitching. Of his career 5.5 WAR, 2.4 is from his pitching, and 3.1 from his batting. In 416 PA, he put up a line of .306/.326/.429, and 35% of his career appearances came as a pinch hitter.
