Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-16-2019

Hugh Fullerton on the 1919 World Series in the Memphis News Scimitar, October 16, 1919:

“They spilled the dope terribly. Almost everything went backward, so much so that an evil-minded person might believe the stories that have been circulated during the series. The fact is that this series was lost in the first game, and lost through over confidence. Forget the suspicious and evil-minded yarns that may be circulated.”

Fullerton, of course, was one of the key figures in breaking the story that the Sox had indeed thrown the Series.

When one of your starting pitchers got his nickname as a result of all the line drives he gives up, you probably don't have a very good baseball team. Excellent outfield, though.

Birthday Team:
C: Brian Harper (12.3 WAR)
1B: Tim McCarver (28.3 WAR)
2B: Jonathan Schoop (13.2 WAR)
3B: Art Devlin (36.4 WAR)
SS: Rodney Scott (4.0 WAR)
LF: Bryce Harper (31.5 WAR)
CF: Kevin McReynolds (30.1 WAR)
RF: Goose Goslin (66.1 WAR)

SP: Garland Buckeye (8.1 WAR)
SP: Bob Cain (5.2 WAR)
SP: Don Hood (5.4 WAR)
SP: Boom-Boom Beck (4.5 WAR)
SP: Dave Sisler (3.0 WAR)
RP: Jack Baldschun (4.4 WAR)

Manager: Dan Howley
Power Forward: Dave DeBusschere
League President: Will Harridge

RF: Goose Goslin (66.1 WAR)

Goose Goslin has played in every World Series game in which a Washington team has ever participated, in 1924, 1925, and 1933. Barring a zombie resurrection, that streak will come to an end next Tuesday.

Power Forward: Dave DeBusschere

I looked at DeBusschere's record, some oddities stick out. After a partial year at A ball, the White Sox promoted him to the majors, He threw 18 innings of 2.00 ERA ball. 7 runs, 4 earned on 5 hits and 23 BBs (8Ks)!

He spent all of '63 in the majors at 22, ERA + of 113, then spent the next two years as a mostly full-time starter at AAA. In his last year he gave up 120 runs, but only 99 earned. That struck me as pretty outrageous but the whole PCL gave up 7284 runs, of which 6238 were earned, so DD's ratio wasn't that outrageous compared to league. After that he stuck with basketball, which was a fine choice. He was a perfect complement on the Reed/Frazier/Bradley/Earl the Pearl Knicks.

Edited for spelling.

"If you think Dave DeBusschere is a great athlete, You're better off never having seen him play baseball." -- Boyd & Harris, TGABCFTABB
