Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-22-2019

El Paso Herald, October 22, 1919:

Carl Mays having shown the way, Babe Ruth now threatens to put on a similar stunt. He is quoted as saying he’s going to turn in his contract which calls for $9000 or so a season to president Harry Frazee and demand one for not less than $20,000. The Babe figures he is the biggest drawing card in baseball and that as such he’s entitled to the money, even if he has to declare his present contract a scrap of paper to get it. Why not? Didn’t Carl Mays set an example and didn’t Mr. Frazee condone it? It’s either Boston pay Ruth his price or sell him to come club that will. Doubtless New York will buy.

Pay the man, Harry. I know it’s expensive. I know it’s a pain. I know you’re frustrated. Trust me, though: PAY THE MAN.

I don't feel like spending the time to figure out if today's Birthday Team is likely to become the first roster with two 70+ WAR players on the right side of the infield, but it sure seems that way.

You know you have a good ballclub when Ichiro! is your third-best position player.

C/Manager: Bill Carrigan (13.2 WAR)
1B: Jimmie Foxx (96.6 WAR)
2B: Robinson Cano (69.6 WAR)
3B: Sam Bohne (7.3 WAR)
SS: Al Myers (7.8 WAR)
LF: Lou Klein (7.1 WAR)
CF: Gerald Young (6.0 WAR)
RF: Ichiro Suzuki (59.4 WAR)

SP: Wilbur Wood (50.0 WAR)
SP: Johnny Morrison (19.0 WAR)
SP: Jumbo Elliott (8.6 WAR)
SP: Kid Carsey (7.2 WAR)
SP: Oscar Jones (5.7 WAR)
RP: Darren O'Day (16.5 WAR)
RP: Hector Carrasco (9.2 WAR)
RP: Cecil Upshaw (7.4 WAR)

Owner: Phil Ball
Fun name: Chick Lathers
Not the guy who played Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller's Day Off: Jeff Jones

Well, he could have been the best...

I agree. It's well established that the Dugout gives Japan credit. Ichiro could have easily added 30 WAR had he started his career in MLB. And RDP used to argue that he could have played in MLB as a rookie if he really wanted to. And he's a lawyer, so he must be right.

Still no way he's better than double X.

August 22 could put Paul Molitor at 2B and Carl Yastrzemski at 1B. They both played hundreds of games at those positions but more at other positions.

It looks like there are no true 1B/2B birthday combos with over 70 WAR. Bobby Grich's birthday is January 15, a day before Albert Pujols's.

Gerald Young was 65 for 92 as a basestealer in 1988! Well, I said to myself, he must've had some tremendous success in the minors and then learned the hard way about NL catchers' arms, right?

Nope, he was 54 for 81 in Columbus the previous year.

So he must've adjusted in 1989, right? Nope, 34 for 59. Omar Moreno would be proud of that dedication.

That was before teams knew how to do math.

I recently learned what a creep the 'other' Jeff Jones is
