I looked at the leaderboards, and I think that both the NL and AL leaders in IP had the lowest totals ever for leaders of their respective leagues (in non-strike years).
   3. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 02, 2017 at 11:11 AM (#5542701)
Charlie Blackmon won the batting title, becoming the ninth different Rockie to lead the league in BA. Props to you if you can name the previous eight without looking.

Helton, Morneau, CarGo, Holliday, Walker, Galarraga, Burks ... Pierre?
   5. BDC Posted: October 02, 2017 at 11:20 AM (#5542715)
Cuddyer was one.
   6. Tom Nawrocki Posted: October 02, 2017 at 11:40 AM (#5542744)
Burks and Pierre are negatory, the rest are correct (including Cuddyer). The only guy you're missing won it last year.
   7. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: October 02, 2017 at 11:49 AM (#5542766)
Earl Wilson and Gary Peters were the good-hitting pitchers of the early-mid 60's. Wilson has lifetime 7.7 oWAR with 35 lifetime HRs

DeLemahieu or however you spell his name for the Rockies.

Times on base (w/o ROE), 2015-2017

Votto, 934
Goldschmidt, 859
Rizzo, 802
Trout, 798
Altuve, 796

The Cubs have been around 120 years longer than the Rockies, and have 10, 4 of whom were 19th century guys. In the last 100 years, the Cubs have had 5: Derrek Lee, Bill Buckner, Bill Madlock, Billy Williams, Phil Cavaretta.
   11. Batman Posted: October 02, 2017 at 02:28 PM (#5542920)
The White Sox have three batting titles- Luke Appling twice and Frank Thomas once. The Rockies have had more than that in the last five seasons.
   12. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: October 02, 2017 at 02:44 PM (#5542940)
Pirates have had:
Sanchez
Madlock (2x)
Parker (2x)
Clemente (4x)
Alou
Groat
Garms (who?)
Waner (3x)
Vaughan
Wagner (8x)
Beaumont

so that's 25 seasons by 11 players
   13. Rennie's Tenet Posted: October 02, 2017 at 03:30 PM (#5543012)
Debs Garms is noted for being named after perennial Socialist presidential candidate Eugene V. Debs. His 1940 batting title was controversial because he batted only 358 times.
   14. Batman Posted: October 02, 2017 at 03:38 PM (#5543026)
Debs Garms's middle name was apparently "C."
   15. Don August(us) Cesar Geronimo Berroa Posted: October 02, 2017 at 03:42 PM (#5543029)
I think the Reds have 7.

cy Seymour, 1905
Edd Roush, 1917 and 1919
Ernie Lombardi, 1938
Pete Rose, 1968, 1969, 1973
   16. SoSH U at work Posted: October 02, 2017 at 04:00 PM (#5543052)
Red Sox
Foxx 1
Williams 6
Goodman 1
Runnels 2
Yaz 3
Lynn 1
Lansford 1
Boggs 5
Nomar 2
Manny 1

11 players, 24 titles.
One short of the Pirates (though Honus's first one came before the Sox existed).
   17. BDC Posted: October 02, 2017 at 04:23 PM (#5543077)
The Rangers have won three batting titles: Julio Franco, Michael Young, and Josh Hamilton. I somehow remembered all three, which even given that I lived through them is not usually enough :-D
   18. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: October 02, 2017 at 05:05 PM (#5543120)

Astros players have three titles (Altuve, Altuve and Altuve), which is at least more than the Mets. And I completely forgot Reyes won that title in 2011.
   21. Bote Man Posted: October 02, 2017 at 05:44 PM (#5543163)
Unrelated, but in the ballpark:

Jorge Castillo @jorgecastillo
5 qualified batters walked more than they struck out this season: Joey Votto, Mike Trout, Anthony Rizzo, Justin Turner, and Anthony Rendon.

   23. Batman Posted: October 02, 2017 at 06:28 PM (#5543184)
Tommy Davis won the batting title the first two years Dodger Stadium was open. Those are the only two the LA Dodgers have had. They had nine in Brooklyn.

11 players, 24 titles.

And Williams got cheated out of two. Well, one, in '54 he'd have under contemporary rules, and the other, '49, he lost by something like than a fraction of a point carried out to the fourth decimal place.
   25. AndrewJ Posted: October 02, 2017 at 07:12 PM (#5543201)
The Phillies have eight batting titles, including three in the 19th century. Richie Ashburn is the most recent winner, 60 years ago next season. Pete Rose was probably robbed of Bill Madlock's 1981 title; in a couple of editions of TOTAL BASEBALL Rose was even awarded the crown.

Yeah, Williams didn't need one more hit. He could have made do with one less at bat.

And that would have given him his third Triple Crown. I believe only he and Hornsby have two.

Carew - 7
Oliva - 3
Vernon - 2
Buddy Myer
Goose Goslin
   30. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: October 02, 2017 at 10:15 PM (#5543265)
I just saw Aaron Judge and Brett Gardner sitting next to each other out of uniform, being interviewed at a press conference. The visual was hilarious - between the weird shape of Gardner's bald head and the fact that Judge looks like he's sitting about 50% closer to the camera than Gardner, if you didn't know they were members of the same species, you wouldn't have guessed it.

I'm not going to bump the NFL thread, but sheeeit that's a hell of a way to lose an under 48 bet...

Always easy to award crowns you don't have to give. I guess the operative part here is that John Thorn recovered whatever senses he had.
