Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-9-2013

Pittsburgh Press, October 9, 1913:

In one of the greatest games ever staged on any ball field, the New York Giants took the second game of the world’s series yesterday afternoon [3-0 in ten innings].
...
The game was a pitchers’ battle between two veteran pitchers. Matty, the greatest pitcher on the New York staff, was sent to the mound by McGraw, while Plank, the star southpaw of the Athletics, was on the hill for the Mackites.

Mathewson threw a ten-inning shutout, and Plank (obviously) took a shutout into the tenth before giving up three runs. Weird thing about Game Two: Giants relief ace Hooks Wiltse played most of the game at first base because starter Fred Merkle was out with a swollen ankle and backup Fred Snodgrass had to leave the game with an injury.

A bunch of colorful characters on today's Birthday Team. I get the feeling Marquard and Pepitone would be fast friends, and that they'd spend much of their time making Charlie Faust miserable.

Also, the front office can probably save money on Downing's conditioning program. Instead of lifting weights, he should be able to just toss Patek up in the air a few hundred times a day.

Mike Moustakas had 341 runners on base for him while he was hitting this year (not all at the same time). He drove in 30. That is....something.
