Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-25-2011

Milwaukee Journal, November 25, 1944:

Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, commissioner of baseball since 1921, died at St. Luke’s hospital Saturday morning at 5:35.  He was 78 years old.
...

Landis, a gruff speaking old man with shaggy white hair, battered hat and keen wit, became a legend in his lifetime.  He was noted for his fairness and as a man who always gave the underdog a break.

Unless they had too much melanin.  In which case they were screwed.

In all seriousness, though, the linked article is an excellent obituary.

Today's birthday team has an excellent CF, a solid 1B, a decent quarterback, and not much else:

C: Mike Ryan
1B: Nick Swisher
2B: Gene Handley
3B: Chico Walker
SS/Manager: Bucky F. Dent
LF: Gene Bailey
CF: Joe DiMaggio
RF: Mark Whiten

SP: Bert Cunningham
SP: Frank Corridon
SP: Jakie May
SP: Jim Weaver
SP: Ray Narleski
RP: Octavio Dotel

QB: Joe Borchard

Some sources list Freddy Parent's birthday as November 25, some list it as November 11. Parent would start ahead of Dent if eligible for today's team.

his physician described him as a "pretty sick man" [quotes in original]

Spare me your medical mumbo-jumbo, Doc.

Note that article to the right of the Landis at the very top, the one about the wife of the soldier that wanted him to have a baby by another woman, who is also a soldier. Then there's the "duck the oyster" dance one.

Not to mention the single sentence on page 3 that confirms that Hub Zemke was a German POW, almost a month after he had been shot down. Zemke was one of the finest American fighter pilots of WW2, not only for his own flying skills (he was an ace with 17.75 kills), but for his sterling leadership and development of tactics as commander of the 56th Fighter Group, the premier P-47 Thunderbolt unit of the war.

Headline: Girl, 5, Admits Banging Baby's Head on Ground. She said she didn't know why she did it.

See picture of Adm. Halsey and Harold Stassen where the reader is instructed to note that Halsey wears shorts.

OK, I'm leaning toward playing an online baseball simulation game for the first time in 5-6 years... which one do people here like?
Diamond Mind, Whatif Sports, something else?

If you actually want to PLAY the games, then Diamond Mind is a fine choice.
If you're more into being the General Manager, then OOTP is probably a better choice.
