Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-10-2017

Boise Evening Capital News, November 10, 1917:

M.E. Cantillon, president of the Minneapolis Baseball club and one of the real powers in the American association, issued the following statement today:

“The fact that the Indianapolis, Louisville and Toledo clubs may withdraw from the circuit, will not disrupt the American association…[the remaining league owners] will see to it that clubs are placed in Louisville, Indianapolis and Toledo, thereby keeping the circuit intact…In regard to Toledo, [Milwaukee owner] Mr. Timme and I hold a 10-year lease on Swayne field, where the association games are played in that city…If Bresnahan goes into the Union league he will have to build a new ball park, a rather expensive operation in these lean days of baseball.”

[St. Paul club president Norton]: “If any owners in the American association want to get out, I wish they would and we’ll start new clubs in their towns next spring.”

Your move, Union League.

A nice Birthday Team today. If a basketball game breaks out, Gene Conley is a nice weapon to have. If a drag race breaks out, don't tell Jack Clark - his attempt to break into racing didn't go particularly well.

I can't believe it's been 18 years since the Dodgers traded for Shawn Green. Damn, I'm old.

Not so fast, whippersnapper. When I first started following baseball, Birdie Tebbetts was the Reds manager and Jimmie Dykes was one of the coaches. I thought Dykes was older than sin back then; now, I'm 5 years older than he was then. ;(

According to today's Exactly As Old email, I'm twice as old as Jerry Hairston Sr. was when he made his MLB debut. One time in the mid 1980's I got to a game at old Comiskey really early and nearly ran into Hairston in a concourse behind the stands playing around with a couple of kids. There's a pretty good chance I saw three major leaguers up close instead of the one I knew of.

By the time I was old enough as a child to follow baseball, his name was a dirty word in my household. But he had some really good seasons before that.

Check out the unusual usage of the pitchers on the 1982 Red Sox.

This IL-AA stuff sounded familiar. Turns out they were doing the same thing 101 years ago.

If a table leg in the clubhouse goes missing, I'm checking under first base.
