Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-13-2012

Milwaukee Sentinel, November 13, 1912:

Jimmy Block, the Milwaukee catcher, declares that he is through with baseball as far as the Milwaukee club is concerned. A finger on his throwing hand is badly maimed, and he says he will never don a Brewer uniform again unless the club is willing to pay for a surgical operation on the finger.

I don’t know if Block ever got the surgery, but there’s no record of him in professional baseball in 1913. He returns in 1914 with the ChiFeds, then eventually spends part of 1916 back in Milwaukee.

No superstars on today's Birthday Team, but the pitching staff is really deep.

Yes, it's weird to play Wes Parker in right, but he played 155 career games in the outfield, and it allows me to use Bilko at first instead of Larry Harlow in right field.

hunter morris led the Southern League in home runs, rbi, hits, slugging percentage, total base, and extra-base hits. he bats lefty and plays first base. huntsville is a fair minor league park in that guys who hit there seeem to hit in the majors. he doesn't have great control of the strike zone with his 117 to 40 strikeout to walk numbers show. he isn't an outfielder and he's already 24.

doug melvin is wise to not sign hart long term and i would not be shocked if hart gets traded before the start of the season.

Cubs sign Scott Baker to a 1-year deal. He had Tommy John in April.

Baker gets $5.5 million guaranteed, plus 1.5 in possible bonuses. That's nuts.

If the Twins really couldn't match that, that's sad.
