Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-1-2012

Salt Lake Tribune, November 1, 1912:

Lon Romney, one of the best football players in the Rocky mountain conference, and an excellent baseball player as well, has a berth awaiting him on the Denver Western league club if he decides to play professional baseball.
...
“He’s just as good a baseball player as he is a football star,” some one told Hendricks. “If that’s so, I want him,” declared [Denver manager Jack Hendricks].

There doesn’t seem to be any evidence that Mitt’s first cousin once removed ever played pro baseball, but it was a weird thing to stumble across right now.

Today is also the 50th anniversary of a first-ballot Hall of Famer signing his first professional contract. Can you figure out who it is before clicking on the link?

Also, at some point today it will be 1,000,000,000 seconds since the Pirates sign free agent pitcher Luis Tiant.

OK, this is a bit scary. Not the fact itself, but that you know it.

Eh, it's 11,574 days. If you can figure out 10,000 days, you can figure out 11,574 days. Same principle.

Wow! I guessed the HoF'er correctly. Blind hog meets nut.

I guessed Willie Stargell; right year, but not the answer.

As always, SLAM.canoe.ca is the best place to go for all the baseball transactions.

We have the first waiver transaction of the winter, as Scott Maine has been claimed by the Blue Jays from the Indians.

Amazing how many Yankees are now free agents. I guess that happens when the entire team is over 35 years old.

Soriano just declined his option.

Other free agents are Swisher, Kuroda, Chavez, Pettitte, Martin, Lowe, Andruw, Fred-Gar, Ibanez, Ichiro, and of course Mariano Rivera.

I went with Fergie Jenkins which is also the right year but not the right answer. 1962 apparently was a good year to be signing ballplayers.
