Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-29-2017

El Paso Herald, November 29, 1917:

The frequently made statement that president Weeghman of the Cubs is “about to close a deal for Rogers Hornsby of the Cardinals,” is repeated [in Chicago] and this time with more definite detail. In exchange for Hornsby and catcher Snyder, so the statement goes, Larry Doyle is to go to St. Louis as manager and Fred Merkle will be sent along to play the outfield for the Cardinals.

The deal didn’t happen. This was perhaps because Branch Rickey wasn’t the sort of guy who would trade one of the greatest young players in the history of the sport for a fading former star and a mediocre first baseman who was famous for screwing something up.

A bunch of strong bats on today's Birthday Team, not to mention an unhittable relief ace.

Also, I don't think the two Fun Named Pyles are related - one was born in Nebraska, the other appears to have lived virtually his entire life in Reading, PA.

I thought Mike Easler was a decent outfielder for a while with the Pirates, for a guy who didn't have any natural gifts in that part of the game. After a while, though, he started trying to cut off or catch balls he couldn't reach or making unwise throws, and eventually became a DH or nothing type of fielder.

Vin Scully turns 90 today - would think he'd be worth a spot on the Birthday Team!

Argh, absolutely he is. I just forgot to add him.

Hamelin turns 50 today. I'm starting to think he might not become a star.

I feel like I mention this at least once a year, but I love Hamelin's method of retirement: He grounded out in AAA ball, turned right at first base, went to the clubhouse, got dressed, and went home.
