Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-2-2012

Grantland Rice on the Horace Fogel situation, Washington Times, November 2, 1912:

“I never said it,” related Prof. Fogel. “And if I said it, I never meant it. And if I meant it, I will never say it again.” Oh, very well.

Fogel, for his part, now says that NL President Thomas Lynch can’t ban him because employees can’t fire employers.

You know, that team would look a lot better with Roger Clemens, George Sisler, Miguel Cabrera, and Reggie Jackson

And with Pablo Escobar at shortstop NO ONE would be sliding in to break up a double play. Well, maybe one guy, but he'd be the last.

Happy birthday, Bob Tufts.

I believe today is minor league free agent day.
   6. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: November 02, 2012 at 09:46 AM (#4290743)
So what happens if you are eligible for free agency, but do not file for free agency? Do you return to your last team? For what salary? I was thinking about Randy Wolf who is eligible for free agency, but is out for all of next year with TJ surgery. Could he opt to just return with the O's to rehab and get them to pay for his surgery and rehab? If not, does he pay for all of that out-of-pocket (or through some sort of MLBPA health plan?) Or workers comp?

It's automatic now (I think they changed it about two years ago).

I've been doing some hunting but I can't find any info. Does anyone know if Clubhouse Confidential (Brian Kenny's stat based show) is coming back to the MLB Network this winter?

Also, if you already need a baseball fix MLBN has the Arizona League Rising Stars game tomorrow at 8PM (Eastern time). (rosters here)

#8: I saw an ad last night that it returns Monday at 7:30.

Here's Monday's MLB Network schedule.

Connie McGillicuddy, great grandson of HOF manager/owner Connie Mack, appears to be losing the race for senator in Florida. Can we get a movement to name him the next commissioner of MLB started? He will be out of work, er, available.

Greg A. Harris was able to throw with both hands, although I believe he only did it once at the major league level. He had a special glove that could be worn on either hand.

There was story that during a Pirates/Phillies game, Harris came into pitch with Van Slyke on at first. Randy Ready was playing first for the Phils, and it prompted this exchange:

Van Slyke - What's up with his glove?

Ready - He's amphibious.

Van Slyke - What does that mean, he can pitch underwater?

EDIT:

Found a link that semi-confirms it: http://www.sportstvjobs.com/resources/dumbest-sports-quotes.html

There's been a bunch of waiver wire moves today. (everything from the indispensible mlbtraderumors.com)
BAL claims A.Casilla from MIN. CHN claims Z.Putnam from COL. CLE claims B.Wood from KCR. KCR claims G.Moscoso from COL. KCR claims B.Hayes from MIA. MIN claims J.Roenicke and T.Field from COL. MIL claims A.Leon from HOU. KC DFA's J.Jeffress, T.Hottovy, and J.Bourgeois.

N.Morgan and K.Loe refuse outright assignments, are now FAs.

More to come, I imagine.

Its a minor move, but its pretty stupid of Dayton Moore to lose a useful reliever like Blake Wood to get a third string catcher like Brett Hayes. Especially since they already had a third string catcher on the 40 man roster in Adam Moore.

I liked Hottovy, and he's a local kid, so I hope he clears waivers somehow. There is certainly dreck on the 40 man roster worth jettisoning before him.
   15. JJ1986 Posted: November 02, 2012 at 03:42 PM (#4291067)
I read that as Brandon Wood and got confused about both why he was on the Royals and why he was on a 40-man.

sorry 'bout that.

Moscoso looks like an interesting pick up by KC.

That's what they said about Mazzaro.

mmmmmmm

Mark McGwire to join the Dodgers as a hitting coach.
   21. Mike Webber Posted: November 02, 2012 at 05:16 PM (#4291151)
AG#1, man I think you hit it on the head as far as Brett Hayes, Wood and Hottovy.
Moscoso in and Jeffres out seems like another case of the Royals not understanding the power of K's for pitchers. In fact they seem to be directly opposite of most teams in how they think about the role of K's and BB with regard to both pitchers and batters.

4 way tie in Diplomacy. That shouldn't even be allowed.

Apparently the Cubs have acquired Dan Haren. For Carlos Marmol?!?!
   25. puck Posted: November 02, 2012 at 08:30 PM (#4291281)
That's weird the Rockies waived Moscoso and Roenicke. I don't keep good track of their minor league system, but I wonder if they have a lot of minor leaguers who need to be put on the 40 man.

I know we don't do a Primer Dugout on weekends, but check out the pitching staff for the November 3rd Birthday Team: Bob Feller, Jim McCormick, Bob Welch, Ken Holtzman and Harry Staley. With Armando Benitez and Paul Quantrill in the bullpen.
