Toledo News-Bee, December 1, 1911: Fred Merkle was [in Cuba] two years ago with the AllStars and he tells a funny story of the time when he and Germany Schaefer spent a half hour in a Cuban restaurant trying to tell the waiter in Spanish what they wanted to eat.
They racked their brains trying to think of the Spanish word for “beans.” Schaefer even tried French by saying “petit pois,” which means small peas. Merkle, who speaks German, even tried “sweiner fleinsch” [sic] for “pork”, but all in vain.
...
“Say,” finally said the waiter, “are you guys trying to order pork and beans?”
It’s a bit weird that Germany spoke French and the other guy spoke German.

I blame the American educational system. To this day, a hundred years later, most schools still do not teach Swahili.
They should have asked for maharagwe. Before I learned Swahili, I found myself in a restaurant in a small village in France trying to order pork by oinking (once you oink at a waitress you are not likely going to boink said waitress). Now I would ask for nguruwe and be properly rewarded.
Bravo.
You know, my high school actually did teach Swahili.
"Oh I think most of them do down there."
The piece also lists events occurring on this day in history, including two Hall of Famers busted by the IRS for not reporting autograph income, the Cubs releasing Ernie Banks, the White Sox trading Luis Aparicio, the Colt-45s become the Astros, baseball opts not to have a DH - despite John McGraw's support for it, Twins owner Calvin Griffith and Dodger manager Walter Alston each turn 100 years old today.
edited to add:
TRIVIA QUESTION: can you name the two guys busted by the IRS for not reporting autograph income? Click on the link above to find out the answer.
Bob Feller?
Pete Rose seems like an obvious answer.
I detect a flaw in this answer.
Edit: Nope.
How bout Joe Jackson.
D'oh!
McCovey and Snider.
