Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-12-2013

Joe Tinker quoted in the Salt Lake Tribune, December 12, 1913:

Should any club other than the Cubs or Pirates land me I can only say I feel sorry for the magnate who made the transaction. Under no consideration will I play next season for New York, Brooklyn, Boston, St. Louis, or Philadelphia.

I’m sick of these star ballplayers like Joe Tinker and Albert Belle refusing to even consider playing in New York or Boston.

I'm really enjoying Joe Posnanski's Top 100 Players series. Still waiting for the Jose Oquendo entry, though.

Tony Cloninger is a close second.

Tully Sparks is a memorable deadball name, for sure. He still ranks high on several Phillies franchise leaderboards: 6th in IP, 11th in Wins. A teammate named Bill Duggleby is 7th in IP. I wonder if the two of them discussed that prospect on the Phillies' bench 110 years ago :)

Phenomenal Smith.

Check out Phenomenal's stat line for 1887; it's a wonder his arm didn't fall off.

Phenomenal Smith is my favorite baseball name ever. It's like a two-word poem.
