Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-13-2013

Toledo News-Bee, December 13, 1913:

[Christy Mathewson] was chinning the other day and made a crack about the carrying of grips around the country. You know, ball players have to do quite a bit of lugging in the summer. As a rule, the right-handers invariably tote the bag in their right mitt and the southpaws with the left hand. Not so with Matty. He makes his lazy wing do all the heavy work. And he has for 10 years.

Matty also spring the argument about the amount of energy wasted by flingers in balls that do not go over the plate. He declared that he discovered that thing his first year in the majors and that he set out at that time to get the control.

...with any physical luck he’ll probably be in there whipping ‘em over five or six years from now.

He didn’t have any physical luck.

Two Hall of Famers and a pretty good pitching staff on today's Birthday Team. Other than Doby, though, these guys are going to struggle to produce offense.

Heyman reports the Rockies and Boone Logan have agreed on a three-year deal. Gotta lock down those 40 innings a year.

Jerry Sands DFA'd. He is a star in OOTP 14 every time so it's weird thinking of him as a washout.

So they spent $5.5M/yr on their LOOGY, $2.5 on their closer, $6.25M/yr on their first baseman, -$7M on centerfield...

Just listened to the most recent Rany Jazayerli/Joe Sheehan podcast, and Rany revealed that he was a finalist for this position in the Cubs front office, but ultimately lost out. (Also, he's ending the podcast due to family and other obligations.)

Brian Falkenborg used to be my go-to reference for a "randomly" chosen obscure major-leaguer. Apparently he's been in the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks bullpen for FIVE YEARS! Check out these stats. Doiminant!
