Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-14-2017

Ogden Standard, December 14, 1917:

Earle Neale of the Cincinnati Reds, best known to the sporting world as a fast outfielder, has won as great fame this fall as a football coach. Neale coached the West Virginia Wesleyan eleven, developing one of the strongest teams a small college has had this past season. Neale’s boys played tight games with both Washington and Jefferson and Penn State.

Earle “Greasy” Neale was a pretty good but unremarkable outfielder for the Reds in the teens and 20s. He was a much better football coach than he was a baseball player. Neale somehow coached Washington and Jefferson to an undefeated season and a Rose Bowl trip in 1921. He eventually made his way to the NFL and won back-to-back league championships as the Eagles’ head coach in 1948-49. He’s in both the Pro Football and College Football Halls of Fame as a coach.

Is there no winter meetings thread? White Sox apparently made a "strong offer" for Machado per Rosenthal. Well, that's interesting.

In 1917, Neale and Jim Thorpe both played for the Reds and the Canton Bulldogs. The Reds must have had a pretty fast outfield with Neale, Thorpe, and Edd Roush.

Thorpe also coached the Bulldogs, who went 9-1 and won the league championship. Canton didn't play the next year because of the war.

Since the politician John Anderson having passed away a few days ago, have we done an all-political lineup? I know we've done presidents based on last names but how far can we get with first and last name (not limited to presidents but should at least be a politician of note)? Jim Bunning is an obvious choice. Slight cheating but maybe Jerry Browne makes the cut.

Grover Cleveland Alexander is also slightly cheating.

There were two John Kennedys and a George Washington, all of whom had negative career bWAR.

Tip O'Neill didn't have the same real first name as Tip O'Neill but they should qualify.

I guess the apostrophe doesn't work in the bb-ref clicky link: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/o'neiti01.shtml

John Adams would be in the bleachers banging away on that drum.

Welcome aboard, John Tyler.

edit to add: I'm not sure whether he counts because it's not his given first name, but there's also Zack Taylor.

Jo(h)n Jay might have to sit with the Jerry Brown(e) team.

And, probably cheating, but Kaiser Wilhelm.

Deleted. Someone already mentioned the John Kennedys.

Does Robert "Bob" Kennedy count?

John Mitchell could sit in the bullpen.

Safe to say that Joe McCarthy is managing the team.

Weird trade alert!

LAD get Matt Kemp from ATL for Adrian Gonzalez, Scott Kazmir, Brandon McCarthy and Charlie Culberson.

Obviously about structuring payrolls and helping Dodgers with the luxury tax. ATL to DFA AGon.

Weird trade alert!

Yeah, I just saw that on the ticker while watching the Northwestern-DePaul basketball game. It started out "Dodgers acquire Matt Kemp from Braves for Adrian Gonzalez" and I thought, I guess that could make sense as kind of a reverse-challenge trade, but then it kept scrolling through the other players.
