Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-15-2017

Chicago Eagle, December 15, 1917:

The oldest baseball in captivity has been discovered in Syracuse, N.Y. A few years ago the oldest ball extant was found in Pittsburgh, and was insured for $1,000 against loss. The ball was used in a game played in 1864. George Geer of Syracuse, now comes forth with a ball which he claims was used in a game between Utica and Syracuse on August 22, 1861. Geer’s father, Harry Geer, pitched for Syracuse in 1861, and in the game in which this particular ball was used. Utica was defeated, 30 to 20.

*looks around nervously*

It’s the oldest baseball, you guys! Trust me. It’s older than the other one. Really. I’m not making this up.

Today's Birthday Team has one of the worst outfields of the year. If it were a real team, they'd probably put Eddie Robinson in left.

C: Nig Clarke (8.9 WAR)
1B: Mo Vaughn (27.04 WAR)
2B: Art Howe (13.92 WAR)
3B: Sammy Esposito (1.95 WAR)
SS: Aaron Miles (0.99 WAR)
LF: Bill Van Dyke (-0.66 WAR)
CF: George Stumpf (-1.25 WAR)
RF: Luis Montanez (-1.24 WAR)

SP: Stan Bahnsen (22.86 WAR)
SP: Rick Helling (20.61 WAR)
SP: Ray Herbert (18.9 WAR)
SP: George Hemming (15.21 WAR)
SP: Doug Rau (12.74 WAR)
RP: Mike Proly (8.46 WAR)

Backup 1B: Eddie Robinson (15.12 WAR)
Fun name: Ken Trinkle
Manager: Jim Leyland

Mike Proly, who had five career hits, has the tenth most batting WAR for December 15 guys. Ryan Pressly, who's never had a plate appearance, is 14th.

Only the oldest in captivity. Who knows how many are out there in the wild, just roaming around.

In "The Man Who Invented Baseball," a descendant of Alexander Cartwright said he remembered cutting an old ball open to see what was inside, and getting a whipping for it. He speculated that it might have been the ball from the first Knickerbocker rules game.

Carlos Santana to Phils. 3yr/$60mil.

Cozart to LAAAAA (3/$38). I'm guessing to play 3b.

That, but more importantly gives them roster flexibility at SS and 2B as well. If they go with a six man rotation, that only leaves 12 position players, so it's crucial to have someone that can handle multiple roles like that. Thought it would take more to get him. This is the most optimistic Angels fans have been going into a season probably since the Pujols signing, so grain of salt, of course.

There is a Japanese Hall-of-Fame outfielder who was born on December 15. I'm sure he would be better than the three choices given. Hiroshi Ohshita was a three-time batting champion, three-time home run champion, and MVP in 1954. He put up a career line of .303/.367/.480 from 1946 to 1959. During WW2, he was trained as a kamikaze pilot, but his number didn't come up and he survived the war.

Matt Moore to TEX for prospects. One is minor league reliever Sam Wolff, eligible for but in selected in yesterday's R5 draft, who will miss the first half of '18 with a flexor tendon injury.
Deal is about SF clearing payroll...

SF also got P Israel Cruz (an organizational player) and gave up 750k in int'l bonus money.

Really like this for Texas.
