Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-24-2013

Milwaukee Journal, December 24, 1913:

Frank Schulte, the Cubs’ 1911 Chalmers trophy winner, is mourning the loss of the automobile emblematic of that title. It was destroyed by fire last week near Schulte’s fruit ranch in Georgia and the outfielder himself had a narrow escape from accident.

And that’s how he got the nickname “Wildfire”*. Now you know…the rest of the story.

(* - I made this up. It is not in any way true.)

Absolutely dreadful Birthday Team. Jack Graham (.231/.310/.427, 96 OPS+) is by far the best offensive player on the roster. Frank Taveras (.255/.301/.313, 72 OPS+) is the only player born December 24 with more than 500 career hits. Starting pitchers comprise 37.5% of the top eight in career hits.

At least Kevin Millwood has experience winning ERA titles while posting a losing record.

What happened to the mobile version of the website? The beta version was released in the last year.

That's a better list than I would have predicted: though of course Millwood is arguably the weakest pitcher on his own list. Searching for comps by Starts and ERA+ often brings up very comparable careers across eras, but in this case Millwood made a relatively large number of starts without the effectiveness of most guys of such longevity – even his contemporaries, like Javier Vazquez. Millwood didn't throw many innings per start (relatively) or complete many games. He had a tendency to mix a few excellent years against some pretty bad ones. And at that, of course, it's a 30-WAR career, which is the Hall of Quite Decent. Being the worst pitcher on a list of very good pitchers is not a dishonor.

I am now reporting that Masahiro Tanaka may or may not be posted some time this week or next. But a decision might be close. And if not, it will be made after that.

At this point, Victor Cruz deserves a "Not That One."

I assume we won't have a dugout tomorrow, so we should all celebrate Rickeymas today.

Who just signed with the Dodgers yesterday! (Insert "I thought he retired six years ago" comment here)

#4--Heh. I've just completely stopped following that saga!

Just someone sign him. Or not!

Chris Perez to the Dodgers. Because legal weed.

The Dodgers have at least 5 right-handed short-relief pitchers who are better than Brandon League now. I still can't believe they gave him so much money.
