Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-26-2013

Milwaukee Journal, December 26, 1913:

DENVER, Col., Dec. 26—A baseball pitcher has involved the city and county in a damage suit for $3,000. Mrs. Hazel E. Lebew in a complaint filed in the district court, asserts that on Sept. 21, while she was passing the baseball grounds maintained by the city at Washington park her nose was broken by a ball. She asserts that the backstop behind the catcher was too low to stop a badly thrown ball.

I imagine it looked something like this.

True fact: Warm Front Davis batted 1-for-4 lifetime against Storm Davis.

If I figured right, teams have won 465 consecutive games when the pitcher had 5 or more plate appearances, and the game was 9 innings or less. The last loss was on 4-8-78 when Rudy May had 5 PA for the Expos, but his team lost to the Mets 6-5.
Of course, such games for pitchers have become rare. There were six in 2009, three in 2010, four in 2011, six in 2012, and just one in 2013. The one last season was Francisco Liriano for the Pirates vs the Cubs on July 5th.

Mike Leake had 5 PA in this 2010 game.

Never mind- I didn't see the 9 innings part.

Ted Lyons had 9 PA in this 21-inning loss.
