Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-27-2013

Pittsburgh Press, December 27, 1913:

President Louis Heilbronner, of the Central league, has traded Umpire Billy Thomas to the Ohio State league. Umpire Jess Goehler will come to the Central in exchange.

Mind. blown. I had no idea you could trade umpires.

David Aardsma supplanted Hank Aaron as the first player in MLB history, alphabetically.

Birthday second baseman (?) Craig Reynolds and Willie Randolph debuted with the Pirates three days apart in mid-1975, and combined to play 3700 games in the majors.

Connie Johnson is one of those players for whom you most need to click on that "NLB/Minors" link at B-Ref to appreciate his career. It spanned 22 years as a pro, broken early on by Army service in WW2.

And Norm Larker would be better known today if he had had one more hit in 1960.

Roy White drew a ton of walks and played great outfield defense at a time when no one cared if you drew a ton of walks and played great outfield defense.
