Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-4-2012

Honolulu Star-Bulletin, December 4, 1912:

When Albert Billings kicked his cork leg across the home plate in the ninth inning of a game at Canfield, Colo., the score being a 5 to 5 tie, the umpire called the runner safe…Umpire Jerry Carter consulted the rule book, declared that there was no precedent, and held to his decision.
...
The shortstop tossed the ball to the catcher, ten feet ahead of the runner, the cork leg flew off and crossed the plate, while the owner of the leg dropped to the ground. The catcher stepped out and tagged the prone figure, but the umpire was watching closely and ruled that the foot at the end of the cork leg touched the base.

Man, talk about a knotty problem. I’d have called the guy out, but that’s just me.

A word of advice: Do not mess with the Birthday Team's fourth starter. His big brother has been known to beat the holy living crap out of people.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Where in the world do you come up with this stuff? Cork leg scores, owner doesn't. Unbelievable!

These old newspapers are a goldmine. I've read some crazy stuff, most of which I don't mention because it's not baseball-related.

Fun fact of the day: Roy Halladay received no votes in the Cy Young Award voting for the first time since 2005.

Baseball historical item at THT notes that today is the 10th anniversary of one of the most lopsided trades of the 2002-03 offseason. Can you guess what it is before clicking on the link? Hint: involved 2 NL teams.

2012 was also the first time since then he didn't finish in the top 5. I really hope he can bounce back next year.

Wrasslin Primates: CM Punk's having emergency knee surgery and the dirtsheets (PWInsider) are reporting it as legit. The day he ties Cena for the longest reign in the last 25 years, since Hogan's big reign in the 80's.
