Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-4-2012

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, December 5, 1912:

Walter Rehg, who joins the Pirates again in the spring, has one distinction. It is that of being the “world’s sassiest ball player.” Veterans have tagged him as the freshest, noisiest and most cussedly impudent “rooky” that ever battled for a job.
...
[Rehg’s first major league at bat was a pinch hitting assignment.] “Who are you batting for?” asked [Bill Klem].
“Why, I’m going to get a hit for myself, old top,” replied Rehg with a saucy grin.
“Don’t get fresh with me, you young busher…what’s your name?”
“Rehg,” replied the youngster.
“How do you spell it?” demanded Klem.
“You don’t spell it,” yelled back Rehg. “You whistle it.”

Rehg proceeded to absolutely crush a ball to deep center field, where (unfortunately) it was caught. There are some other choice anecdotes in the linked article. It’s a fun read.

Not a lot of talent for manager Tebeau to work with on today's Birthday Team, although the thought of Cliff Floyd being a member of a brawling, rough-and-tumble ballclub is a bit scary. That's one big dude.

Tribe and 'backs talking AsdruCab for Bauer, sez Anthony Castrovince at MLB.com. TINSTAAPP and all that, but it seems to me Cleveland pretty much has to do that if the other parts of the trade aren't lopsided in Arizona's favor.

Cabrera is a good but not elite player who'll be gone by the time Cleveland contends. You're not likely to get a better offer than Bauer in return.

I don't get why Arizona traded for Cliff Pennington with no intention of playing him. Chris Young must have had more trade value than that.

Snake would be a good pinch-hitter/utility-man also

“Why, I’m going to get a hit for myself, old top,”

Why that's the exact phrase I heard at the Strickland Propane company softball game!
