Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-5-2013

Phillies manager Red Dooin, quoted in the Pittsburgh Press, December 5, 1913:

The sacrifice play, in my opinion, should not be worked very often. Here is the way I figure it out:

We get a man on first base with no one out. The next man sacrifices and puts the runner on second. Then the next man has to hit it safe. If he doesn’t you have wasted two of your men and it is up to the last chance of the inning.

By Jove, I think you’ve got it!

Well, sort of. Dooin’s Phils led the league in sacrifices in 1913 and were close to league-average in 1914.

No kidding. I can usually recognize 2/3 or more of the B'Day teams, but today, only a few. Ed Summers is interesting. In a 5 year career, and he consistently set new career lows every year. Wins went 24, 19, 13, 11, 1. ERA went 1.64, 2.24, 2.53, 3.66, 4.86. IP 301, 281, 220, 179, 16. WHIP went up every year, ERA+ down every year.

Do as I say, not as I do; a phrase well remembered from my childhood.

Tebeau, Shindle and Hawley were all pretty good players in the 19th century.

Chico Salmon was on the December 3 team. Is this the closest convergence among interchangeable players?

A guy I know on twitter who doesn't usually tweet ridiculous stuff is saying the Royals have picked up OF Nori Aoki for P Will Smith. Not substantiated yet though.

The Mariners are gonna trade away all their young players for David Price soon, aren't they?

That would be an amazing trade. (Though if that's true AND the Carlos Beltran offer is true, I have to imagine this pushes Beltran to a nearly full-time DH, which spells the end of Billy Butler's tenure in KC.)

Cubs sign P Wesley Wright.

One would hope that doesn't become a Wesley Wright Fiasco.

Trade confirmed by the Royals - Aoki for Smith.
   15. Crispix reaches boiling point with lackluster play Posted: December 05, 2013 at 12:05 PM (#4611101)
Isn't Aoki pretty much the most underpaid player in the league? (not counting pre-arbitration)

Sounds good for the 'Yals.
   16. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: December 05, 2013 at 12:10 PM (#4611109)
Yea, pretty terrific trade for Dayton. Aoki is a good defender who will probably play RF and hit at the top of the lineup. The Royals can mix and match Cain/Aoki/Lough/Maxwell in CF and RF, although Dyson is also in the picture and is out of options, so I wonder if another trade is afoot. Seems like the trend right now is having lots of depth and not set starters in the outfield?

I wonder if they'll still pursue Beltran and trade Butler and say they don't want a "set DH."

Will Smith is a useful LH AAAA pitcher who had a nice surge in K rate in ten AAA starts last year, but the club (rightfully) saw him as a future reliever. The Brewers could give him one last shot to start, but his future probably lies in the pen.

Cue getting jiggy with it jokes.

Rosenthal says the Royals are still after Beltran so I'm guessing another trade involving Butler is in the works and they'll rotate DH.

Mujica was similar to Koji Uehara for much of his Cardinals' tenure. But late in 2013 he ran out of gas, or was hurt, or something. He was dreadful, so this is not a trivial gamble.

Ed Summers is interesting.

One more bit of Ed Summers info: By championship probability added (WPA * game leverage), he's the worst postseason pitcher ever. Four appearances and four losses, three of which had WPAs of -.866, -.385, and -.507, respectively.
