Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-6-2013

Toledo News-Bee, December 6, 1913:

Comedian Nick Altrock, whose funny antics has [sic] amused the American league fans, is practicing some new comical business on the employees of a lumber yard in Chicago, where he is employed shoving board for 40 cents and hour. Nick declares he is coming back as a pitcher. He hopes to get his arm in shape during the winter.

Altrock did come back as a pitcher in 1914…and threw one scoreless inning. He’d continue to make token appearances here and there for the next ten years, finally finishing his career with two scoreless innings in 1924 at age 47.

Break out the Bushmills, it's Larry Bowa's birthday. The human dynamic on the left side of the infield would be fascinating: One of the most notoriously short-fused players of my lifetime alongside Smiling Stan.

Webb and Belisario were the two most inexplicable non-tenders this year - both have now signed for more money than they were to projected to earn through arbitration. I wonder if the Dodgers and Fish explored trades here?

Webb is shocking, and he says he was surprised.

Didn't Belisario have a falling out with the Dodgers?

Ah, Mike Parrott. 14-12 with a .295 BABIP one season, 1-16 with a .370 the next. That was just when I was starting to notice stats, and that turn really confused me. (Well, the record and ERA, I had no idea about BABIP.) 13.0H/9 in 1980 sounds like an awful lot.

I learned about Mike Parrott when we were trying to find the worst Opening Day starters ever. His one win that year was on opening day.

Carl Pavano nearly died last offseason after rupturing his spleen, but is planning a comeback. He might be a good pick up, since he has officially run out of ways to injure himself.

Baseball needs more pitchers like Carl Pavano.

Granderson to the Mets for 4 years. No word on $

Scott Feldman to the Astros - 3/$30 mill

What's left for next week's Winter Meetings? Drinking games and shuffleboard?

Maybe they're trying to get all their work done now so they can just hang out and drink at the meetings.

When Richie Ashburn announced for the Phillies he would occasionally tell umpire stories. Jock Conlan was always the umpire.

Lord knows, we need more Pavanos.

What did the link have to do with Pavano? Or is that an inside Bloom County joke? BC should have been in my wheelhouse but it never clicked for me.

Nate McLouth to the Nats on a 2 year deal

Garrett Jones to the Marlins on a 2 year deal

Webb's numbers and style look real similar to Jim Johnson, whom he might end up replacing as the O's closer (Tommy Hunter, just... no.) I figure Baltimore got next to nothing for Johnson because he was almost a non-tender.

He's like Logan Morrison, but 6 years older. Good job, Marlins.

17: Right, as Johnson's is going to make a ton of money. Webb - not so much. Should've gotten at least, say, a team's 15th or so best prospect.
