Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-6-2018

El Paso Herald, December 6, 1918:

President Ebbets, of the Brooklyn club, is one who says there isn’t a thing in the talk of the St. Louis Cardinals being moved to Kansas City, and probably what he says will be endorsed by seven other National league club presidents…while [Ebbets] complimented Kansas City as a live burg he made it clear that it is not to his mind of major league caliber, even if the geographical location were not all against it. The burden of transportation is enough as it is, said Ebbets, without lengthening the trips necessary.

The times have changed, of course, but 100 years later Kansas City has a big league team and Brooklyn doesn’t. I guess the Mets play 10-15 miles from the former site of Ebbets Field, so there’s that.

A good Birthday Team today. The only real weakness is the back end of the starting rotation.

C: Gus Niarhos (3.1 WAR)
1B: Stan Hack (52.6 WAR)
2B: Tony Lazzeri (50.0 WAR)
3B: Harry Wolverton (11.4 WAR)
SS/Manager: Larry Bowa (22.8 WAR)
LF: Gary Ward (17.7 WAR)
CF: Adam Eaton (17.4 WAR)
RF: Lance Blankenship (6.7 WAR)

SP: Kevin Appier (54.7 WAR)
SP: Steve Bedrosian (14.6 WAR)
SP: Jose Contreras (13.2 WAR)
SP: Mike Parrott (2.0 WAR)
SP: Kevin Campbell (0.5 WAR)
RP: Jason Bulger (0.7 WAR)

Disastrous MLB debut: Mike Mayers (-1.3 WAR)
Fun names: Tun Berger, Turkey Tyson, Adam Hyzdu, Hack Eibel, Hap Morse
Tragic story: Jay Dahl (-0.4 WAR)
Umpire: Jocko Conlan

Speaking of Adam Hyzdu, the Pirates signed Lonnie Chisenhall for 1 year, $2.75M. His career may have been a major disappointment but he still has a cool name.

How many Birthday Teams have only one HOFer, that being the player with the third-most WAR on the team?

Much has been made of number of rebuilding teams lately. Here's an hypothesis. We know that the marginal value of a win is not constant across teams. Maybe it has changed lately so as to be highly multi-modal. If a bunch of teams have a low value for marginal wins, and some (Cardinals, Yankees, etc) have a high one, we would get what we're seeing. Teams for whom wins aren't worth much would dump vets for underpaid kids. I'm not saying that that's what's doing it, but it could be. If the modes were sufficiently far apart, it would even make sense for teams on the fringes of content (Mariners, Diamondbacks) to trade their vets.

Jay Dahl was killed in a car crash. He was riding with Patricia Troutman, also killed in the crash. The third occupant was a minor league teammate of Dahl, Gary Marshall. For anybody interested, here's what happened to him.

That's a lot for a guy with one decent year in the last 4.

If you hop over to Fangraphs, they have him with three decent years in the last four. BABIP problems, naturally.

Still only 2 of last 4, 3 of last 5, since he didn't pitch at all in 2017 and had a 4.98 FIP in 2016.

I missed the fact that he missed a year.

Eovaldi's peripherals have always been great- a lot to dream on.

Indians sign Carrasco through 2022, club option for 2023. I haven't seen terms.

I guess that's one potential trading piece off the table.

Schoop to min for 1/7+

The Twins also signed beloved former Yankee utility man/mascot Ronald Torreyes for $800K.
