Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-9-2013

El Paso Herald, December 9, 1913:

Members of the Philadelphia Athletics are said to have refused to subscribe their names to 17 demands made by the Baseball Players’ fraternity which is seeking numerous concessions from major and minor leagues. The Philadelphia players are said to have declared that they had no grievances and that to sign would be unfair to manager Connie Mack.

It’s the Players’ Disunion.

It just seems right that Juan Samuel and Tony Batista would be on the same Birthday Team. Wonder twin powers activate! Form of low-OBP power-hitting infielder with a weird collection of skills!

Up at THT: Prince Hal, about Hal Newhouser. Features one of my favorite lists ever - liveballers who won 150 games before their 30th birthday.

This is a very simple one to diagnose. Newhouser blew his arm out thanks to overuse. Below is a list of all live-ball era pitchers to win 150 games prior to their 30th birthday. Please note the name atop the list:

Name W
Hal Newhouser 188
Catfish Hunter 184
Robin Roberts 179
Bob Feller 177
Wes Ferrell 175
Don Drysdale 170
Waite Hoyt 161
Mel Harder 159
Dwight Gooden 157
Bert Blyleven 156
Lefty Gomez 153
Milt Pappas 152
Jim Palmer 152
Ken Holtzman 151
Greg Maddux 151
Vida Blue 150

On his 31st birthday on May 20, 1951, Newhouser posted his 189th career win.

OK, this does not compute. Did he not win a game for a year, did you mean to write 30th birthday in the last sentence quoted, or is it a list of 150 games won prior to their 31st birthday?

5/20/51 appears to be Newhouser's 30th birthday.

Sorry - dumb typo. Win #189 was on his 30th b-day.

Halladay will sign 1-day deal w/ Jays, then retire.

I've argued for a long time that those who believe that Bob Feller's career totals were damaged by WWII aren't considering the possible effects of the workload. I have little doubt that had Feller (who was a year and a half older than Newhouser) pitched throughout WWII that his career - like Newhouser's - would have flamed out much more rapidly.
