Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-10-2018

Cap Anson’s all-time team, published in The Sporting News, January 10, 1918:

C: Buck Ewing and King Kelly
IF: Cap Anson (1B), Fred Pfeffer (2B), Ned Williamson (3B), Ross Barnes (SS)
OF: Bill Lange, George Gore, Jimmy Ryan, Hugh Duffy
P: Amos Rusie, John Clarkson, Jim McCormick

Unfortunately I can’t seem to find a direct link to the article itself. According to an entry in the BBRef Bullpen, Anson does concede that Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, and Eddie Collins are good. They just weren’t good enough to make the team.

A good infield on today's Birthday Team, but otherwise the roster is mostly fairly weak. At least there are a few young players on the way who have a chance to improve the team next year.

C: Johnny Peacock (3.01 WAR)
1B: Willie McCovey (64.43 WAR)
2B: Del Pratt (45.61 WAR)
3B: Adam Kennedy (20.99 WAR)
SS: George Strickland (6.56 WAR)
LF: Bob Brower (2.49 WAR)
CF/Manager: Harry Wright (1.21 WAR)
RF: Chick Stahl (31.65 WAR)

SP: Jim O'Toole (19.15 WAR)
SP: Richard Dotson (16.31 WAR)
SP: Cliff Chambers (8.4 WAR)
SP: Chuck Dobson (3.96 WAR)
SP: Ted Bowsfield (2.46 WAR)
RP: Rick Bauer (1.48 WAR)

Could be the relief ace in 2019: Drew Steckenrider (0.58 WAR)
Could make the starting lineup in 2019: Ryon Healy (3.18 WAR)
Could make the starting rotation in 2019: Ariel Miranda (1.69 WAR)
Not that one: John Houseman
Umpire: Wally Bell
Negro Leagues outfielder, almost certainly a better player than Brower: Fats Jenkins
Clown Prince: Max Patkin

Ross Barnes (SS)

Per BB-Ref, Barnes was a shortstop about 25% of the time. Anything to keep the likes of Wagner out of there.

what was Anson's beef with Wagner?

From what I've read, Anson was grumpy about Grantland Rice publishing an all-time team that Cap thought underrepresented 19th-century players.

I'm not entirely certain Anson had any problem at all with Wagner; I think this was an attempt to "even the score" or some such thing against all these newfangled 20th-century baseballers. None of the players on Cap's all-time team were active after 1906.

One of the first things on George Gore's Wikipedia page is about how he enraged Cap Anson by carousing too much and not taking baseball seriously enough, and still Cap picks him at CF over anyone who was under age 60 at the time. Definitely intended as an old-timers team.

Strange move, IMHO.

That seems odd.

Edit: Coke to snapper.

Negro Leagues outfielder, almost certainly a better player than Brower: Fats Jenkins

And John Beckwith would almost certainly be a better SS than George Strickland.

Neither passed the Cap Anson test.

One can't hold those two stupid referenda against him forever.

Jim O'Toole, ace lefthander for the Ross Eversoles...

Adam Kennedy had a much better (well, longer) career than I realized. Never hurts to be a LHB IF I guess. Sort of a destitute man's Lou Whitaker.

EDIT: Also no way Anson's team makes it a full season without a 4th pitcher. Doesn't he understand how the game is played in the modern era? :-)

SP: Jim O'Toole (19.15 WAR)

Jim O'Toole is pretty unique in that he was a teammate of Jim Brosnan when the latter wrote "The Long Season" and "Pennant Race", and of Jim Bouton when he was writing "Ball Four". O'Toole last pitched in the majors in 1967, but spent 1968 in the minors, and tried to latch on with the Pilots in 1969. He retired when he didn't make the team out of spring training, but at least he got his photo taken as a Pilot...

It's not like Anson had a bias towards players he was teammates with or managed. After all, he never on the same team with Ewing.
