Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-10-2019

Pittsburgh Press, January 10, 1919:

Many people are of the opinion that the adoption of the prohibition amendment by enough states to make the country entirely dry will have a helpful effect on baseball, and cause the national pastime to boom.
...
[Reds business manager Frank Bancroft:] “I can see where thousands of people will now change their daily route and go to the ball park. The suburban garden and saloon have taken thousands of people away from baseball—and now we’ll get them back again.”
...
[AL President Ban Johnson:] “I should put the increase in baseball attendance, due to bone dry laws, at from 10 to 15 per cent next summer,” said he, “Cities like Cincinnati and Chicago will be specially benefited.”
...
[NL President John Heydler:] “Whether we are for or against the dry wave, it is going to boost the game.”

Attendance was up dramatically in 1919, but it’s tough to figure out how much of it was the end of the war and how much was prohibition. My completely uninformed, pulled out of the air with no supporting evidence guess is that it was maybe 85% the end of World War I and 15% prohibition.

Today's Birthday Team would be a lot worse off if not for Beckwith and Jenkins. It's almost like baseball teams in the first half of the 20th century would have been improved by signing people regardless of their melanin level.

C: Johnny Peacock (3.0 WAR)
1B: Willie McCovey (64.5 WAR)
2B: Del Pratt (45.6 WAR)
3B: Adam Kennedy (21.0 WAR)

RF: Chick Stahl (31.7 WAR)

SP: Jim O'Toole (19.0 WAR)
SP: Richard Dotson (16.2 WAR)
SP: Cliff Chambers (8.3 WAR)

NAME THE JOURNEYMEN: ALL-STAR EDITION

(Like yesterday’s, this is a sequential list of every MLB organization the player belonged to—it could include teams he did not play any MLB games with.)

——-

1. Reliever. 2003 All-Star, final MLB game in 2010: White Sox, Cubs, Reds, Rays, Pirates, Jays, Cubs, Angels, Red Sox, Indians, Rangers, Astros, Marlins, Pirates. (This is my absolute favorite one yet.)

2. Outfielder. 2006 All-Star, final MLB game in 2010: Padres, Cubs, Pirates, Mets, Orioles, Padres, Braves, Rangers, Angels, Mets, Reds.

3. Reliever. 2013 All-Star, final MLB game in 2017: Giants, Marlins, White Sox, Tigers, Rockies, Rangers, Indians, Phillies, Pirates, Angels, Braves, Jays, Rangers

4. Shortstop. 2002 All-Star, final MLB game in 2006. Rangers, Indians, Cubs, Braves, Brewers, Rockies, Cubs, Pirates, Dodgers, Indians, Pirates, Phillies, Pirates.

is #1 Brendan Donnelly?

Yep! The first seven teams on the list all got rid of him before he made his MLB debut with the Angels!

That’s the lot of em. Well done!

No. 1 is certainly not Octavio Dotel. He never made an all-star team, though I remember thinking he should have in 02 or 03. I don't know his minor league affiliations, or teams he signed with and never played for but his MLB list goes like this: Mets, Astros, A's, Yankees, Royals, Braves, White Sox, Pirates, Dodgers, Rockies, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Tigers. Impressive in that it's 13 teams and not one repeat.

LF: Fats Jenkins (0.0 WAR, Negro Leagues star)

listed at 5'7", 165 lbs :-)

From SABR:

In the 1920s and 1930s, Clarence “Fats” Jenkins was an athletic wonder. A two-sport superstar, Jenkins was a dynamic leadoff hitter in the Negro Leagues and a brilliant point guard in the early days of professional basketball. An older brother was known as Big Fats, and Clarence, as a chubby youngster, was dubbed Little Fats, which was shortened to Fats. Though he was not fat as an adult, the nickname stuck.

I only knew him from his strat card. He also was a basketball star: "Abe Saperstein, founder of the Harlem Globetrotters... picked Jenkins as one of 10 men on his All-Time, All-Pro basketball team, along with such greats as Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Cousy, and George Mikan"

Luis Avilan to the Mets on a minor league deal. That's a nice signing.

Jed Lowrie to NYM for at least 2/20m

Where are they gonna play all these guys???
   21. JJ1986 Posted: January 10, 2019 at 06:15 PM (#5804334)
That's kind of weird, but I like it. Start Lowrie at 2B and Cano at 1B to start the season. Someone will get hurt or Frazier will suck before Alonso is up. McNeil provides cover everywhere. JD Davis must have options left.
   22. Davo cant be eatin thirty hot dogs every day Posted: January 10, 2019 at 06:20 PM (#5804336)
I had missed the news they had no tendered Wilmer Flores. Oops.

But still:

Robinson Cano, Jed Lowrie, Todd Frazier, Jeff McNeil, JD Davis, Amed Rosario, Peter Alonso, Dominic Smith, Dilson Herrera.
   23. JJ1986 Posted: January 10, 2019 at 06:26 PM (#5804338)
I'd be surprised if Smith doesn't get traded before opening day. The team clearly isn't counting on him for anything.
   24. Der-K: at 10% emotional investment Posted: January 10, 2019 at 06:34 PM (#5804339)
Herrera is clearly AAA bound. Alonso can't field at all, reportedly (that said, he's certainly reduced his errors to acceptable levels). They don't seem to believe in Smith. Wonder if Lowrie gets a peek at short?
   25. Davo cant be eatin thirty hot dogs every day Posted: January 10, 2019 at 06:39 PM (#5804341)
I guess the Dodgers have shown you really can never have too much depth. They opened last season with like 20 MLB infielders and still needed to trade for Machado and Freese at the deadline to make the playoffs.
   26. Der-K: at 10% emotional investment Posted: January 10, 2019 at 06:52 PM (#5804346)
And Jim Bowden opined that Lowri might be a super-sub, including at short.
