Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-26-2013

Washington Herald, March 26, 1913:

Heinie Zimmerman had to refrain from practice for a day following the drinking of three glasses of milk on top of some lobster salad that he ate when Johnny Evers was not lurking near.

He’s really gotta stop hanging out with Brad Penny.

Even Harry the K would exhaust his bag of tricks to keep the games interesting with this team.

The point is, Yuniesky Betancourt is a Huxleyan Epsilon among ballplayers.

Virgil Trucks career highlights at THT. Not just the no-hitters, but the time he was on the mound for a walk-off triple play, an apparent beanball war with Satchel Paige, two marathon starts lasting at least 14 innings, and much, much more.

I'm guessing Jamey Wright must be the 3rd or 4th longest tenured pitcher in baseball. What a hero. He's the new Doug Jones.

Let's see...

Miguel Batista - debut 4/11/92. Then his second appearance was in 1996?!?
Darren Oliver - debut 9/1/93
Andy Pettitte - debut 4/29/95
LaTroy Hawkins - debut 4/29/95 (not against Pettitte)
Mariano Rivera - debut 5/23/95
Jamey Wright - debut 7/3/96
Livan Hernandez - debut 9/24/96
Bartolo Colon - debut 4/4/97
Derek Lowe - debut 4/26/97

Others who debuted in 1995-97 and played somewhere last year:

Jeff Suppan isn't in anyone's camp. He has been approached to run for Congress against Julia Brownley (D - CA-26). Maybe he's the next Bob Dornan.
Jason Isringhausen isn't in anyone's camp. He is at home in Illinois and may be a coach for SIU-Edwardsville.
Livan Hernandez isn't in anyone's camp. He should have showed up to the WBC and insisted on playing for Cuba.

Dennys Reyes is still pitching in Mexico.
Brett Tomko just signed with the York Revolution. I should go see him pitch.

Kevin Millwood officially retired.
Chan Ho Park officially retired.

my thoughts on the phillies:

offensively, things could come together rather quickly. they have howard and utley back and apparently healthy, which is huge. for as much #### as ryan howard gets, there is no doubt that the phillies offense will be substantially better for having him at 1B and not ty wiggington. in addition, they've replaced placido polanco with michael young at 3B, another substantial upgrade, and they're apparently prepared to give the reigns over to domonic brown and ben revere in the OF, which could pay dividends if either/both can play to the potential they showed as prospects. revere with batting average, defense and stolen bases, and brown with power and plate discipline.

but what has me reasonably optimistic about the potential for the offense to come together is that the next generation of hitters (revere, brown, ruf, asche, joseph, galvis) lines up very well with the previous generation of players (howard, utley, rollins, ruiz) in the way they complement each other in terms of both position and skillset. if howard and utley rebound and if ruf and brown develop into quality hitters, again, things could come together very quickly.

and then with the pitching staff, i'm not really concerned. hamels is an anchor and i trust that halladay and lee will pull things together at some point. neither one of them is going to make 20+ starts and finish the year with an ERA over 5, so i'm reasonably confident that, whether the velocity is there or not, if they feel healthy, they'll be good.

beyond those, krafty kyle kendrick is what he is, so i'm not concerned there. and the 5th starter isn't much of a concern either. the phillies have guys like cloyd, pettibone, morgan and martin in AAA, so if lannan shits the bed in april, i have very little doubt that they'll be able to pull some production out of AAA by may.

and in the bullpen, i'm not concerned, either. papelbon and adams could be great, if healthy. they still have a ton of impressive LOOGYs (bastardo, horst, diekman, valdes) and they still have a few interesting power righties (aumont, de fratus, stutes, friend).

i think they're the 3rd best team in the NL east right now, but since the central and west appear to be very weak, the phillies should have a reasonable shot at the playoffs.

FWIW, i'm a whole lot more optimistic than i was at this time last season.

With the cutting of Miguel Batista, I think Darren Oliver and Alex Rodriguez are the only active players who played in the era before the World Series was cancelled.

Jim Thome would be another one.

He's on a potential playoff team now. I think about five years ago he had the most games pitched among active players without reaching the postseason and still hasn't made it.

Looking it up, it was most starts back in 2007. I'll bet it's most games by now.

and Manny is still active, just on a different continent.

One option would be to use Tsutomu Tanigawa, who played 21 games at catcher for the Hanshin Tigers in 1962/63. Career .160/.160/.200 line in 25 PA, but he was a catcher...

He was Rule 5'd by the Pirates, and returned to Montreal early in the season. Based on the those few weeks, Batista has outlasted Tim Wakefield as the last active player who played on a winning Pirate team.

Miguel Tejada (1997 debut) looks like he's going to make the Royals roster.

I assume Juan Rivera is making the Yankees. MLBTR is not listing him as either made the team or undecided.

And its just a foregone conclusion that Jason Kendall will come out of retirment to join the team mid-summer.

When do rosters have to be set, some time on Sunday?

The Denver Post seems to think Yorvit Torrealba is making the team despite Ramon Hernandez being signed for 2013. So I guess a move is coming.

Players on minor league deals who reached free agency by having 6-years of service time have to be decided on today.

Wouldn't it be more like, career probably over? Or did I miss an announcement that went beyond his feeling that he won't be able to play again?

Congrats, you made the team!
Also, CLE: Rich Hill and Matt Albers

Between Hill, Kazmir, Giambi, Ubaldo Jimenez, and Ryan Raburn, the Indians look like a mortal lock for the 2008 American League pennant. And with hot prospect Drew Stubbs on the roster, they'll be set in center field through at least the time he hits arbitration in 2010 or so.

[michael] Young will wind up on the All-Star team for the same reason he wound up on the Phillies: third base nowadays is a yawning bunghole of irredeemable detritus from which there is neither escape nor redemption. Playing third base full-time is like being loved by Barbara Hershey in a movie. If baseball’s positions were the novels of Robert Heinlein, third base would be I Will Fear No Evil, an unpolished mess conceived and written in a fever.

If I was in charge Kevin Frandsen would wind up on the All-Star team, because [michael] Young would be platooning with Ryan Howard.

Michael Young is on the Phillies because of injuries to Headley, Wright, Sandoval and Freese?

I saw Hill pitch last night vs the Rockies. He's dropping down pretty far vs lefty hitters. He gave up a triple over Bourne's head to a lefty OF, Charles Blackmon.

i'd wondered before how pinched an alamodome baseball alignment would be. courtesy of an upcoming two day exhibition series to be played there (sd v. tex), we now know: 340 (4' wall) - 395 - 280 (16' wall).
