Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-16-2014

Pittsburgh Press, January 16, 1914:

Germans belong in the infield. The big Teutonic invasion of baseball has produced German pitchers, German catchers and German outfielders, but the place where subjects of the kaiser belong and have made their best showing is in the infield.
...
It has been held by a good many that Germans are a slow-thinking slow-acting race, but this is really far from the case.
...
They are not a warlike, but rather a military race. When Irishmen and the fighting Oriental go out and scrap because they like it, the German fights because he must.

Pass.

not enough Krauts

My clearest memory of Jack McDowell pitching was in the first inning of this game at the Ballpark, now amazingly enough 19 years ago. With a man on first, McDowell pitched Juan Gonzalez very carefully: three straight balls, further and further low and away, and if you remember Gonzalez, a pitch he wouldn't swing at had to be very low and away. Then, as if to say "ha! Got him right where I want him!" McDowell threw one up and on the inside part of the plate, and Gonzalez turned on it like a madman and hit it into the bleachers. I was never convinced of McDowell's genius after that, though he certainly had good major-league stuff. But then again, it was one data point :)

Through age 27, McDowell won 81 games, twice won 20 games, won a Cy Young, finished 2nd in Cy Young balloting the next year. At that point, it probably wasn't unreasonable to think that if McDowell could age gracefully, he might be a HOF candidate. He was offered a lucrative contract extension, but he and his agent brother turned it down. Then the strike happened, then he gave up a big hit in the ALDS, then he got hurt with elbow and labrum issues. The guy retired at age 33, having made just 24 starts after the age of 30. I feel like if you replayed his career in a slightly different time period, he's a very good pitcher and perhaps a borderline HOFer, but dem's the breaks.

Amezaga will need to cover some serious ground in CF with those guys on either side of him; Dizzy, Jack and the rest will need a lot of K's to make up for the shoddy outfield defense.

Jimmy Collins joins Gene Alley and Tommie Agee on the "You couldn't hang around to get just one more stinkin' hit?!?!" all-star team.

Uh, what? The Showboat was born in 1899. :)

Most career games played by a left-handed throwing shortstop: Jimmy Macullar

There's a self-writing headline for an article on his career fadeout.

Showboat held the starting job on the birthday team for over 80 years. He's bitter about sitting on the bench, but nobody can figure out how to make trades possible in this league.

Chris Getz signs a minor league deal with Toronto, my long national nightmare is over.

Creative interpretation of timezones?

I still contend that birthday teams should use the DH (due to lack of trades), so he still gets PT for me...

Angels sign IF John McDonald

There are also reports they're not seriously after Tanaka, I don't know if that has to do with the McDonald signing though.

May 27 seconds the motion.

April 6 also throws its weight behind the DH motion.

Thanks Mr. Foley, I was way too literal today.

Any rule that keeps Steve Balboni on the field is a good rule.

Apparently most of the owners think that Tanaka is going to sign with the Cubs.

Amezaga

Whoa!!

Amezaga was the player picked right before Albert Pujols -- and they have the same birthday.

That's what happens when you sort the spreadsheet by birth date and name.

Roberto Hernandez/Fausto Carmona found a way to get himself traded in the birthday league.
