Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-17-2018

Richmond (Indiana) Palladium, January 17, 1918:

The ball players of Cuba seem to have killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Headed by Mike Gonzales, the Cardinals’ Cuban catcher, they have made demands so exorbitant that baseball has been put on the shelf [in Cuba] for the present season at least.
...
Gonzales explained that [players would have to receive] seventy-five percent [of gate receipts] or no baseball. [Owner Charley] Brown replied that in that case there would be no baseball. And the players who might have been taking in very satisfactory wages are now idle.

Cuban baseball 100 years later: “You think your wages are low? Hold my beer and watch this.”

Speaking of Cuban baseball and Mike Gonzalez, his 1911 Fe teammate Louis Santop headlines today's Birthday Team. Santop was a fantastic ballplayer, perhaps the best catcher in Negro Leagues history not named Josh Gibson. (Santop was a better hitter than Biz Mackey, but nobody beats the Biz defensively. They're about even, IMO, and there's no wrong choice between the two.)

C: Louis Santop (0 WAR)
1B: Darrell Porter (40.8 WAR)
2B: Denny Doyle (3.8 WAR)
3B: Tyler Houston (1.5 WAR)
SS: Don Zimmer (2.7 WAR)
LF: Harry Bay (11.1 WAR)
CF: Hank Leiber (14.5 WAR)
RF: Chili Davis (38.2 WAR)

SP: Trevor Bauer (8.5 WAR)
SP: Lum Harris (4.3 WAR)
SP: Blake Beavan (1.5 WAR)
SP: Jocko Thompson (1.2 WAR)
SP: Rob Bell (-0.5 WAR)
RP: Mark Littell (6.7 WAR)

Manager/Fun name: Mayo Smith
Fun names: Cad Coles, Holly Hollingshead, Yohander Mendez, Tripp Sigman
Fun name/Game show host's son: Pete LaCock
Fun nickname: Mikado Milt Scott
Former Mid-American Conference players: Emmanuel Burriss (Kent State), Jeff Tabaka (Kent State), Mark Malaska (Akron)
German for "Cabbagey Miller": Kohly Miller

[Owner Charley] Brown replied that in that case there would be no baseball.

Probably for the best for him - his team lost 99 in a row, and that line drive back up the middle was eventually going to knock his block off.

Mike Gonzalez was also the majors' first Hispanic manager, if only for 22 games in two interim stints. He's also the coach whose stop sign Enos Slaughter ran through to score the winning run from first base in the 1946 World Series.

He was distracted. In 1918, his beagle was off fighting the Red Baron.

I recall Harry Bay as having the rep for being one of the fastest men in baseball - he led the league in steals twice, and and 40% of his extra-base hits were triples. I suspect he belongs in center field.

Mikado Milt Scott, Buttercup Dickerson... I don't know of any other 19th century players nicknamed after Gilbert and Sullivan characters. Ernest Lawrence Thayer said that Gilbert's "Bab Ballads" influenced him in writing "Casey at the Bat."

Here are Santop's NeL stats.

Has anyone devised a MLE for the Negro Leagues, and can a rough version of WAR for Santop be hammered out?

This set of MLEs, done by Eric Chalek, has Santop at 56.2 WAR.

Great, thanks. He's a Hall of Famer, all right.
