Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-19-2018

Chicago Eagle, January 19, 1918:

MATTY TO PITCH IN SEASON OF 1918

Christy Mathewson, manager of the Reds, is coming out of his retirement as a hurler. Big Six will take the mound next season, he announced the other day. As his club will have to get along with six pitchers, he will keep himself in condition and be ready to go on the slab when his services are needed. The veteran hardly can be expected to take his regular turn or pitch many games, but he plans to aid as a relief hurler and pitch full games if necessary.

Matty didn’t pitch in 1918. He managed the first 118 games of the season before enlisting in the army. Unfortunately, his time in the military went almost as poorly as it could have gone.

I should mention that Kim's disastrous postseason ended with a World Series ring, so he's not too much of a goat.

I wore Sabo-style sports goggles for a year or 2 of little league.

1988 doesn't seem all that long ago, but, according to bb-ref, Sabo's salary his rookie year was $62,500. Darryl Strawberry made $36,000 five years before that.

I saw that the O's released Aaron Myers, an unheralded but generally decent A-ball reliever who has been old for his leagues, who they acquired for international slot money last summer. While that the O's habitually trade away their ifa slots is well documented, has anyone studied the return they've gotten for those slots relative to what other teams have received?

Sabo is now a baseball coach at IMG Academy in Florida and is still apparently unable to open his eyes. He's had a pretty remarkable baseball career, considering that.

Looks like Sabo has upside-down mouth eyes.

Kim went on to work in the Rockies rotation for a couple of years, to no great success, although I loved watching him work and always hoped he would turn things around.

It's also interesting to note that the collapses in the 2001 Series didn't seem to have much effect on him. His best season by far was 2002.

As a kid I used to mix up Jon Matlack and Jerry Koosman all the time. Don't know why

Both were lefty #2 starters behind Tom Seaver, with multiple All-Star selections, on some good Mets teams in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

I still mix up Jon Matlack and Doc Medich and am not entirely convinced they are two separate pitchers. Have they ever been photographed together???

Ah, just like I used to mix up Rick Helling and John Burkett.

Until AJ Burnett reaches Pittsburgh, he's merged with Josh Beckett for me. There's also a first baseman named Karrokleskonerko who played 25 years and hit about 600 homers.

I used to mix up Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich. Apparently, so did their wives.
